For example, some sort of aluminium mini-spacer between handle and camera body. Once the first Redvolt was drained and I swapped it with a fresh one, the camera started to have more and more episodes of overheating. Of course I was relying heavily on the redvolts (four in total). The ideal scenario would be to have the v-locks. But this does raise the question about how effective the sidehandle is as a power source for the camera. The way I see it is you either have the option for the very occasional tight shot where a minimal rig is required, in which case all is fine as is, or you can actually have the option to shoot for some time using the redvolts only. In sensitive documentary settings where you may need to get in quickly this may be the only option you have and to have the fan kicking in at 100% in a quiet room can be a bit off putting.

As I couldn't afford a Scarlet yet, I don't know .. could you use a beltclip v-mount and have the sidehandle working? Would keep your setup nearly minimal ....

That's what I have but in this instance I had returned from another location with batteries drained, so had to rely on Redvolts. But there we go, live and learn...

The problem is not the batteries - it is the power management. What I believe is the key element contributing to the delay of power management release is that fact that even when we are not recording - the camera still has to debayer the live picture for the monitoring path - which IMHO drains the most power anyway. Perhaps a hot-key to turn off the monitoring path (and the debayering), or at the very least a standby mode. But I am sure they are working on a way to save some power while still allowing for some live monitoring...

One thing is sure - it is coming...

To add to what I've just said - I would like to see a mode that turns off the live monitoring path (and the power hungry debayering) but allows us to continue to use all menus - so we can go about setting up our projects and camera settings without draining much power. Then simple push of a button and the image path is enabled...

UPDATE: So, I opened a ticket about the clock resetting every time the power was disconnected. RED responded quickly with an RMA to return the camera as soon as it was convenient. I had a two week window between shoots so I sent it in on a Monday, 2 day shipping courtesy of RED. It arrived there Wednesday, and they dealt with the issue within a couple days. The camera was given a once-over and pronounced healthy. It was shipped OVERNIGHT on Monday and is back in my hands, ready to rock. Total elapsed time, slightly more than a week. All through the process, the communication was great and each inquiry I made was responded to almost immediately.

Kudos to RED. Great customer experience and it's very nice they took care of this small but annoying problem as if it were a major breakdown; quickly and efficiently. Thanks to Chad and Christine for doing a bang-up job!!

Now, if I could only get that cable to stretch a few inches!!

I hate that I've spent over 20 grand with Red and they still charge me in the Hollywood store for a sticker to put on a Pelican case. Really?
