Updated! Sorry about that.
I'd hate to see your electric bill!
Sam
ha, their online service says you can backup external harddrives.. but if you don't reconnect the drive every thirty days (ie, you just store them away).. they will assume the data stored on the cloud is redundant, and they delete it.. i thought my archiving prayers were answered, oh well, i didn't fancy the eight years of upload time anyway..
the enclosure looks nice, the only problem is replacing the obsolete disk drives in two years, unless you stock up on them..
always interesting too see a bit of d.i.y
I've got a Backblaze account. It's great! But yeah, only if you keep your storage permanently attached.
Thanks for the link, AJ. It is entertaining, at least. I passed it along to a couple of friends who are crazy enough to try to build one...
Issues with the Backblaze storage pod. It is designed to provide a massive amount of storage, yet not a massive amount of speed.
The bottleneck for Backblaze is the internet, so having two 1000 base T ports is sufficient for their needs.
I would not like to deal with a storage pod like that... connected via Ethernet, well, maybe via iSCSI over ethernet, but that is not the fastest out there anyway.
Still, the design of the case looks intriguing, since it opens the door for a few other modifications.
For example, you could throw away their motherboard with boot drive, and replace it with a cyclone board, and connect all of the esata cards to the Cyclone.... and then to your computer.
All of the storage would appear as direct attached storage, no idea of the transfer rates that could be achieved though.
Maybe one day I'll try that, yet, no money for that kind of toys right now. Maybe when the hard drive prices go back to reality.
Looks like the price clocked in a bit higher:

I know that the specified interface is ethernet, but locally this thing should scream right? I don't see any reason you couldn't use this to edit.
seems like there is a blog about it as well. lot of interesting things on such a hefty unit, including risks of building such a beast.
