The idea of buying a new camera every time something new comes along is just too expensive. That is why we subscribe to the "update" philosophy.

I could be wrong and everything changes but last I remember the Epics didn't need as much re-working to be upgraded. Where as Scarlets needed a new board and sensor or something.

yea, i remember thats what they were saying. Who knows though what they are working in their secret labs. All im saying is that id be ok if my scarlet didnt get dragon and instead was able to function like epic. That would be awesome.

Jim seems to love spreading his enthusiasm after midnight. I wonder how he sleeps at night -- if, in fact, he does :)
I think its great how Jim's words stir up so much (60+ responses so far) controversy and speculation among us.

Jim, Jarred, et al -- Clearly your vision and formula is working and now the masses are all paying attention and competition is scrambling to play catch-up. I love it! I am behind you and share in both your vision and enthusiasm.

Thank you for making truly awesome feats of camera engineering in the R1 and DSMC platforms. I, for one, am glad they are the price they are. I WANT for Red to turn a reasonable profit and be around for years to come, and for that to happen you have to make some money. R&D costs money, creating production lines with top of the line equipment and tooling costs money, skilled labor costs money, marketing, well you get the idea....... SO, thanks for having the cojones to make something no one ever tried before and pushing through all the barriers, and not just settling for another cookie-cutter 1080p camera for $3000 because you could sell millions of units to the masses.

Finally, I'm glad you guys sorted out the whole backorder thing.

    Keep up the great work!

The idea of upgrades is to give better performance to our customers. Obsolescence obsolete. Keep your iron current.

That's the ride I signed up for Jannard. I appreciate your thinking from a user point of view, not a marketer. One day soon, within 5 years. There will be a 2lbs camera more powerful and the R1 or Epic. I'd like to see you guys make that camera first.

If Canon can update their entire camera for $3,500 maybe RED can update the sensor for $2000? Who knows?
