The reason I was holding for the Canon 24-70 II was for the hope it would have IS. Since it was announced it didn't have IS my interest for this lens vanished. Now this Tamron is exactly what I wanted! IS is essential for that range when working without a tripod- unless you want the shaky cam look...
Tamron sounds like a viable option to the Canon. Though Canon has delayed the release it does not really matter. The Tamron probably will not work with RED until they set it up. I am sure they will have plenty on their plate with the new firmware release. The Canon will probably work out of the gate...I hope. I would get the Tamron now but there is no way of knowing how the camera would react. My rep confirmed that its so new it has not been tested yet. If it was confirmed I would jump on it. If not...might as well wait and see if Canon smartens up and gets that big trombone out of there and slaps some IS on that thing.
The old 24-70 was used to shoot a lot of good video.
The Tamron tests better than the old 24-70.
But ... it's useless unless RED characterizes it.
So, if you are interested, open a ticket. I did, but the response underwhelmed me.
This is the only 24-70 with IS (unless Canon's delay is due to adding IS ... seems doubtful, as it would be a complete re-tooling), so ... I hope that RED can be persuaded to put this on their priority list - as it will add value to the camera.
Actually, we'll be in the same boat with the Canon 24-70 II. It will need to be characterized, so ... I hope RED has a staff member whose only function is to characterize Canon compatible lenses, especially those that stand out and are not from Canon.
BTW - what's the current list of compatible lenses? Is it this:

All the tests I have seen are using the mk1 canon 24-70mm as a comparison and I am not surprised that the new Tamron can challenge this older design. I would love to see some serious testing of the new mk2 Canon 24-70mm but I suppose that very few exist outside Canon.
The original Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L was a lens almost exclusively made to the requests of the Photojournalists world wide, and as most of you will know, photojournalist don't care much about Super Sharp glass, they care about the perfect range in a zoom, and they want accurate autofocus, and fast autofocus.
The new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II is supposed to have faster Autofocus and be also much sharper then the first one.
Be careful in going too fast on Tamron lenses, as they have quite some quality control issues and you might find yourself with a lens that needs to go back.
No one has officially tested the new Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II.
But what is that you must know is that the Canon 24-70 is the most favorite zoom lens for every Photo journalist for their range and Fashion photographers for the particular look that this lens give its images.
If you need a 24-70 now, well but the Canon version one, preferably used as it will save you few hundred dollars that you will not loose when selling in few months ot switch to the version II if it does turn out to be really as much better as anticipated.
If you want the Image Stabilization, try out the Tamron, just be sure to test it at various ISO and apertures on a chart, to insure you have a good copy.
Tamron issues with vignetting at 2.8 on whole range. Canon beat focus at 24mm, Tamrom beat at 70mm
And I understand that Tamron has a plastic front filter mount (but 6 year warranty).
