Red,
you will not get many users on this page that want a pre-record feature. Because pre-recording is a key feature for documentary and wildlife filmmakers. So many of them don’t buy a red cause this feature is missing.
If Red will implement the feature soon this will change. But Red has to implement it soon cause many documentary filmmakers migrate to other cameras like Arri Alexa due this feature.

It was and has always been there on the REDONE have used it for years, yes the Epic does not have it and I would love to have it too.

I was disappointed that it didn't show up on last build :-( I'm confused and I hope this is no bad omen... I've been waiting eagerly for a sleep-mode on my R1 that was similarly announced "on the way", that was almost deal-breaking to me.... and that proved finally a feature impossible to enable !

Even more worrying is the fact that myself and several others have asked Red when pre-roll will be coming many, many times, and we haven't received a single answer from them.

Sure could use this as well. Used it extensively on a recent penguin-leopard seal shoot w/R1 in Antarctic... incredibly helpful when things are unpredictable. Would, of course, also be great to have a "delete last" function if the action never develops.

Pre-record please...ASAP. I never knew how crucial this feature was until I got used to it on the Red One. Now I curse everytime I miss that orca emerges from the water and I'm not rolling, and have hours of takes where I am rolling and nothing emerges in frame.

Pre-record is the #1 feature I would like at this point.

#2 is still sleep mode, but it has slipped way below the want for pre-record.

My understanding is that there needs to be hardware in the camera to achieve this. If it isn't there in the form of a kind of RAM buffer it cant be done.
The issue with hitting the record stop button every now and then to make short clips more easily deletable is that according to the law of sod just as you hit stop button the action happens.

Perhaps what could be done using software is a way to mark portions of a recording, without interrupting the recording? Similar shot markers exist on news cameras.


Lets say you are rolling on a long shot of a highway, waiting for the right combination of vehicles to come around the corner, say a truck in each lane of the 3 lane highway, filling the frame with heavy rigs.
You'll want 10 seconds of a lead into the shot.

You start recording, then every minute or so of rubbish action, you press an assignable button that marks as potentially unwanted, the previous minute or so of recording. (the period could be selectable to between previous one or two minutes or the time between last delete).

Pushing the button just creates a record of the timecode and does not affect the actual recording which continues on, without a missed frame.
The marker could have an offset of 10 seconds or more. This gives you at least a 10 second lead in should the trucks come around the corner just as you push the delete mark button.

Once you have the shot and have stopped recording using the rec start stop button, the camera will ask you if you want to delete the marked shots. If in doubt you say no, if you are sure you go ahead.

The other approach is you push the button after the action happens. You may or may not want to continue uninterrupted recording, it doesn't matter. When you finally hit the record start stop button you are given an option to delete everything in the last file, except what has been marked. This would work well if you are recording speculatively for long periods of time, for example, waiting for wildlife to leave its nest/burrow or waiting for that 100ft high section of glacier to break off.

There is potential to get confused of course and delete the good shot and be left holding the fodder!

May be true, Mike, but why was it announced "on the road map" at early stages by red people, then confirmed and never announced to have been left aside ? And why was it successfully enabled on the red one with no extra-hardware ? Hope you're wrong, because we trust announcements, and may make or have made wrong decisions !

Im not saying that the hardware isn't already in the Epic, I'm assuming that it isn't or they would have enabled or talked about it by now?

Based on other cameras, if there isn't a ram buffer already in the camera it would be convoluted to install it as an upgrade within the camera body.

Marking shots for deletion is an alternative.. maybe:)?
