There will be even greater relevance in a few days...can't wait for NAB -wish I was going though.
Avid was always notorious to be the last one to support new file/cameras formats, which made me switch to FCP!! Is that still the case?
Avid has gone on a mission that past 1-2 years to be as user friendly and relevant as possible. Now with the demise of FCP7, they seem even more focused on adapting and responding to the needs to final cut users that are switching over. Its certainly one of the most flexible and interesting eras for Avid in a long time. I agree with you, for a while they were quite static.
Tempting but still limited to 1080p, yeah?
Avid is a broadcast platform and all broadcast deliverables are still 1080 and will be for some time.
That doesn't mean AVID won't open up and embrace 4k. Don't forget, AVID has it's origins in Hollywood, not television. I'm personally crossing my fingers that 4K is front and center in Avid's announcements at NAB.
That being said, you are correct about 1080 and broadcast....that won't change anytime soon AT ALL!
According to the Director of Product Management, there will be no significant updates to Symphony announced at NAB. Here is a link to his posting on the subject from the Avid-L:

Michael
Wait, I thought (and please correct me if Im wrong) last years Avid MC 6 press leak was all about 4K in the very near (as in today) future?
We just upgrade to MC 6 thinking this was the case after NAB.
Am I dreaming this?
Having spent many years on a Symphony, RT CC was a blessing! And while still a strong product, in today's world it's much to limited. Whether or not you're working in a 2K or 4K environment, RAW is a needed option in 2012. As is the ability to work Log instead of REC709. And many other things that have evolved since Symphony came out. The answer could be as easy as having Symphony & Resolve and bouncing over when needed... That's pretty much what we've been doing w/FCP & Color and apparently will be doing w/Adobe PP & Speedgrade. The sys you don't have to do that in is Smoke. But getting used to Smoke is pretty daunting; I remember many late nights when I was picking it up. Plus editing w/it is cumbersome. Price is probably still the biggest obstacle to many... But, hey, all that may change next week! So to crossgrade to Symphony or not... Hmmm, well, good thing we've got 'til June to decide ;o)
