Thought I might post a thread about this. But I went to a venue the other day and they had a extra wide screen with what looks like 6k, cheap too. It was hard to see, but from what I could tell they had three Benq Fullhd projectors seamlessly stitched together on the screen. Imagine four ones tilted vertically stitched together (4320*1920), how many wide 4k movies could fit in that. ;-)
Reputation is something the unwise apply.
But integrity is what the wise apply.

From what I have hear RED will not boother with DCI. Its just to difficult, especially when starting so late in the game. The Air in the Market is all gone. We are 70% of world done, and going like a train to the finish line. (1-2 years max)
Its also VERY EXPENSIVE to develop the security technology and VERY EXPENSIVE to keep it up to spec (As the Spec does change, or is still changing. One would hope it would have stoped by now)

But yes, this could be used for color grading, but if I was a post house I would likely use the same projector as in the cinema. Why not. not too pricey and you see exactly what will be seen in Cinema. That would be mainly a TI solution from Christie, Barco, NEC. (Sony does their projector, but its not popular on a world wide basis.)

I would also mention, that even tho DCI works in XYZ, it is usually not a colour space used in grading. XYZ is a little newish and alien to the production workflow, so they would likely only use 4:4:4 10 bit (YUV) as that the traditional path. And in the end, makes no real visible difference. ie converted to XYZ for projection in Cinema. Tho I imagine Resolve etc may be able to do this now.

Still there is a very big non-cinema need for such a projector as RED has proposed.
But really, I am not sure it will see the light of day. Its a complete other market and would make them loose focus. I am not convinced about this move at all. Tho would like to see a 10K laser projector.

The bigger issue on all this is the changing of the government regulations in regards to licensing lasers for pubic use. The Hollywood/DCI (all the Studios + Barco, Christie, NEC, Sony are pushing hard here) lobbying effort is the only group likely to get traction on this.. I cannot see RED themselves getting much traction.

We all know Hollywood does walk with the political moves in the US. (As SOPA and similar would indicate) So, once that happens. Bring it on..

any idea about power consumption? trying to figure out what size inverter i'll want for my car, so i can project out of it.

also, any rough ideas about lumens? base model or via laser upgrades...

and i'd really like to use batteries... ultimate portability. you know, so i can project on a tree or something. or an outdoor event. or in my backyard. or from my boat. or when the power goes out. or just so it's wireless... and other things i haven't thought of yet.

Just wondering if the standard version of this would be bright enough to display a 15' image at a sports arena setting while play is in progress? I want to find a project that can say do instant replays on a screen so the audience can see! If the standard version will not do it can it be done by adding extra lasers?

    Thanks

Mark, there may be more purposeful solutions (and cost-effective) for what you want to do... I'd look into it. As most people probably wouldn't be too close to the thing, you might not get much bang for your buck by going 4k. On the other hand, I'm hoping this is going to be the brightest projector available (at least, that's almost affordable to average man) - though it might need the extra juice. I haven't seen this thing in action yet, so I'm really eager to take it for a test drive.

And I know it's probably not going to make a difference to many folks here... and I know I keep bringing it up... but v-mount or redvolt battery power would be huge. Light is a medium. I want to illuminate cave walls and maintain the silence of the deep. That's right, goin' prehistoric. Please consider the cost/benefits, anyone doing projection art will want this thing, believe me.

And what if, like the camera, we liberated the projector from it's inanimate chains? Mounting thread/plate... plus that makes setups a breeze.

Any info on shipping dates yet?
Got a feature to grade in September but I guess that's too early.

it would be actually nice if Red could say if the issue @ NAB has been fixed and development is going on schedule....
as far as we know the projector is still not working ,
i highly doubt that will be released this year ...
