They have to be a different color, they're different model lines.
I like the different colors. Makes it easier to tell the difference without having to read the model or if you're far away from the camera.
Curran (as well as a couple of others) already noted the use as an emergency firmware SSD.
This need was the subject of extended threads on REDUser as well as individual discussions with Bomb Squad reps and RED product development personnel.
RED was and is listening - more importantly, they think it through - if it makes sense, they respond with something we can use.
There are other uses for this product.
For example, once "still mode" or "time lapse mode" are enabled - makes a lot of sense to have these cards.
Dedicating a card for storing essential files downstream - remember, neither the Scarlet or EPIC have SD card slots - who knows what RED has under development...
Someone else mentioned quick reference / startup files for the DIT on location - great idea.
All I can say is a very big "THANK YOU" to all involved with either promoting the idea and developing the product.
Edit: And about the 512's: +++++ Yeah Baby- those will rock!
when are they releasing pricing for these bad boys?
Enough people longed for a cheaper card. For one a lot of Scarlet Users and then a lot of people who want a small, cheap card as a firmware carry-on ;) Also for stills this might be worthwhile.
Also, as these are slower than the standard black SSDs, the 32GB will surely come in cheaper per gigabyte. Think about a $300 price point or similar. Jarred already mentioned $350 is close.
I don't expect them to be half the price of a 64GB. That really wouldn't make too much sense, especially not if they are slower!
half the size and half the data rate of a 64GB... wouldn't that sum up to a quarter of the price ? hehehe!
It will definitely be interesting what the 32s can pull of on an EPIC. So if you buy these, you know what they will produce if you rent or step up sometime in the future.
