  1. #1 NAB 2012 Tape Backup Solutions from Tolis Group
I stopped by the Tolis Group booth; south-lower, tucked behind Intel, near FSI and dot.hill. They have a new version (3.0) of BRU coming soon with some more features like EDL recognition and more IFS functionality, drag and drop, etc..

They were also showing an elegantThunderbolt setup with the Sonnet Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure and ATTO controller with HP tape backup.

Definitely worth a look if you're interested in LTO backups and archives. Seems like they have some nice bundles too.

Also worth a look is ATTO. The Thunderbolt adapter units are nice, a little big and the fans are noisy though...

Thanks for the info Jeff. I didn't get to see the Tolis group booth so that is good info. One question... I've been meaning to purchase and LTO back up system. I've had my eyes on both Bru and Quantum. Which one do you recommend for someone running mac?

On the Mac, the BRU solution with the HP LTO-5 wins hands-down, no contest. The HP drives play wonderfully with the ATTO SAS controllers and the BRU PE software is arguably the best tape backup software for the Mac environment. The Quantum tape drives are fine, but they don't play as nice with supported SAS cards in the Mac environment.

The next best thing on the Mac is probably to look at Cache-A systems. They're a lot more expensive, but do have some nice features that some may find attractive like the onboard storage. Then again, that can be set-up pretty easily on a workstation/server with the BRU/HP combo.

Jeff, any PC LTO-5 solution, other than IBM for LTFS?

+1 on that question. What would an effective hardware/software LTO solution be for PC?
