ZFR100 is a super nice device... very well made.
Marantz recorders have "odd" self noise and handling noise (and no TC)..
TASCAM HD-p2 can accept the timecode from you camera... and chase it.. has decent pre-amps.. it can not generate TC... I think it is a decent deal at $700 street price..
Fostex FR2 (1st version) can be found used with a TC card that is stable.. it sounds "decent" and is stable.. but will eat AA batteries.. like 24 per day... or use the external DC socket.. again, not hand held)..
I *think* Zaxcom ZFR100 is the least expensive compact recorder with TC at around $900 street price....
Sonosax probably also has one.. but for more money... (and FABULOUS preamp quality)..
you will need some special cables to use the zax, and maybe an external power supply ... it also is not really a mixer/recorder ... more like a "set the levels and push record" style recorder... but would fit very nicely with a Mix-pre... and did I mention great manufacturer support?

Thank you all for the input! it's been really helpful. I plan to use a 702 when needed but I just tested the internal audio of my scarlet with the A-box and honestly it sounds pretty damn good.
