I see the question being asked in several places and hopefully we can consolidate it into this one thread. I can't make this a sticky but perhaps if it becomes a useful thread it could elevate to that status to keep everyone informed.

    Here's what we know.
    • The Red One will not offer upgrade path to Dragon. Jim has stated the following.

Think of what options you had with any other camera company.

    • The Red One WILL see future firmware upgrades, including Redgamma 3/Redcolor 3.

As I learned earlier in another thread, better to let Jim or Jarred tell us what the future of Red One is rather than making assumptions, like I did with RG3.

So, for R1 owners, seems like the future is still bright as RED continues to stand behind the camera.

I understand and appreciate the R1 to Epic upgrade path and I'm loving what the Epic can do. It's certainly more than any other camera company would do and i guess thats why we always, perhaps unreasonably, expect so much from them.

I was in stage 2 thinking that i would sell my R1 after getting my Epic. I think Jarred's email made me and a lot of others think that dragon was going to happen, so decided to keep it. I also thought that stage 2 would have a rental advantage in being closer to the front of the queue, but with so many Ms and the back orders that wasn't really the case. I guess I'm just annoyed with myself for not stage 3ing it.

As a non-technical person I can't help but think just put the scarlet bits in the Red One:) There's obviously a reason why this isnt posible and it would be great to hear a bit more from Red why MX is the end of the line sensor-wise. I'm sure they looked at it.

    Cheers

    Dave

I think R1 deserves something more than a few upgrades. I don't know technically how far the camera can go, but RED must consider the future of R1, at least for us who kept and not sale the camera according to stage 2.

Hm... The R1 M and MX are still fantastic cameras "good enough" for features and TV-drama.

What Gunleik said +1. I hope Red continue to keep R1 as up to date as it can to work with the latest software tools, and maybe even tweak the few remaining UI annoyances.

I really believed that the R1 would get the Dragon upgrade too so the recent announcements let me down.

At least the R1's monitoring colour-science should be upgraded. It's horrendous to see Epic and R1 feeds side by side in a two camera shot.

Why would you think that? Jannard said no Dragon for R1 ages ago.

As much as I would like to think of some sensor upgrade, I am perfectly happy with the RED ONE. I still am way ahead of the curve. Like I said before...look at your options right now when it comes to 4K from the other guys... for example, Sony’s NEX-FS700 needs optional 4K recorder via 3G HD-SDI? So complicated...In '09 I was getting 4K on a little CF card! I'm still winning....
