  1. #1 Rehousing?
Turns out the Nicon zooms they used for Bourne's Ultimatum were rehoused by ARRI. Since the lens hype goes over the roof every day I wanted to ask if someone has an idea how much a good rehousing might cost (per lens or per set), both for primes or zooms. I have just bumped on a nice Leitz/Leica rehoused Macro lens for some 9k USD and personally, I would give a finger to get a LEICA primes R set rehoused. Obviously not by ARRI :), but by a house in EU or US where people do not ask for the rehousing as much as for a brand new cine primes set. Any thoughts?

Sanjin would give a whole hand for that I suppose.

    Paul Duclos?

Might be the Red Group Buy of the century...

    we're talking about:

    1. expand focus scale
    2. focus in correct direction
    3. click-less f-stop
    4. PL-mount

    ...right?

Actually, I'd be fine with just #1 and #2 on the list if it could be done cheaply - but hey, might as well go all the way.

I'd say century precision and PS technik would be good places to start. I'm sure Paul Duclos could do it. However, I don't think he has a machine shop to machine all the parts and remark the lenses.

Bruce, thanks for the suggestion, it looks quite interesting. I have to get in touch with the guys and ask them for details. Chris, I was also thinking about PS Technik, I was just a bit uneasy about the probable cost.

OK you don't want to here this but what you are asking for here is complicated. Just the design cost would be huge let alone the fabrication of small volumes of parts. If there are floating elements in the basic lens design it just gets worse. Not trying to rain on the parade but I've been there for this type of thing before.

    cheers,

Chuck is wise and we should defer to his judgement... I'd love to hear what someone would quote for doing a run of, say, 50 sets of 4-5 lenses for interest's sake, nevertheless! Even if they tell us it'll cost more per unit than a Cooke Red set, at least we'll know. Then at least we can mutter "I saved $100,000... I saved $100,000" as we sweat trying to pull focus properly with our unmodified Nikons / Leicas / etc.

Well, PS Technik rehoused zeiss still glass into nikon mount cine primes. They are about $5,000 I think.... So $5,000 per lense is a good guess. I think with glass, you always get what you pay for. There is simply no way to get a lense as good as a $20,000 cooke s4 without paying $20,000 for a real cooke S4. I know Fujinon is throwing around the idea of making PL mount glass. Would be interesting to see what they would come up with. They've made some prototype zooms.
