You do need it. If you don't get it you will notice a strange flare pattern with strong light sources. Hey, I love lens flare but not that kind! The new flare guard, as I discovered when I put it in, is almost complete fix for the problem. It is very easy to get it sent to you by Red. Don't hesitate to do it.
sent to you by Red ?
Yes. You have to send an email to a special secretive division of Red Digital called the OLPF port bushing or something like that. Sorry I cannot find their email address. You should ask your sales rep. It is completely free including shipping to you. Installation is trivial even for the more artistic amongst us.
OLPF@RED.COM
it's pretty simple. Give them your name and camera number, preferably email them from the address associated with your RED account. Or talk to your bomb squad rep, they can probably hook you up too.
And there is a free (thanks Jay!) how-to-install video here:

Anyone know if these have been sent out in high numbers? I requested two about six weeks ago for Epic-X 634 and my early Scarlet. Not in a hurry, just wondering if I should follow up at some point.
I got mine ages ago
Mine arrived within two weeks (USA to UK).
