  1. #1 Blackmagic Design HDMI to SDI converter not passing signal from Scarlet?
Wondering if anybody could help me with this.... I have a hdmi Marshall monitor with loop thru and a Flanders SDI monitor. I want to come out of the Scarlet HDMI into the Marshall and then back out while using BMD's mini HDMI to SDI converter to convert the signal for the Flanders monitor..... but it doesn't work, the Flanders just says no signal. This also doesn't work if I bypass the Marshall altogether and go HDMI out of the Scarlet into the BMD converter and then SDI to the Flanders. Still no signal.

Works fine when going straight Scarlet SDI out to the Flanders, but I'd like to have the Marshall in the mix too. (the Marshall also works fine hdmi from Scarlet) So I am not sure if it is the converter is killing the signal or if the Flanders is not reading it...? (the converter does work when sending the signal from a 5DmkII to the Flanders though).

Any thoughts, am I missing something? Thanks!!

On another note, does the SDI output only a legal range signal or something? The waveform monitor on the Flanders just kind of "jams" up on 100IRE and somewhere between 0 and 7.5IRE on the low end. It will not go past either way no matter how much quantity or lack of light there is.

The signal from HDMI is not identical to the one from SDI, I found this out when trying to record with an UltraStudio 3D by BlackMagic via Thunderbolt (in 25p).

I could record just fine via SDI, it was clean 25p, but via HDMI it didn't work. Other sources work OK in 25p with the UltraStudio, so it must be the camera.

Plus, yes, the signal is strictly legal IRE, no super-white.
    Regards,

What about coming out of scarlet with SDI, and convert that to HDMI?

You'd have more output resolutions like hdmi 1080p24 instead of being stuck with 1080p60. Looks like it has SDI outputs, so that you could get both SDI and HDMI out (but I haven't asked them about this, so give them a call or look at their manual.

Of course, the next firmware release may affect this. I'm hoping they offer hdmi 1080p24, as that would solve a whole lot of connectivity issues.

Don't know if my circumstance is applicable here but-

In trying to get an HDMI signal from my BlackMagicDesign 3D card to SDI for an HP Dreamcolor grading monitor, I discovered:
-The BM card outputs a PsF (Progressive Segmented Frame) signal which my HP monitor would not accept correctly unless I used a NON Black-magic SDI converter (because even the BM converter used the PsF signal). Many grading monitors require a "true Progressive RGB Digital Signal". I bought an AJA SDI converter and this solved the problem.

    So.
you might want to confirm the specs on your Flanders to see if it will accept a signal that is PsF-based off the BM device.
(caveat: BM may have since switched to true Progressive digital RGB signal output as required by MY monitor).

In other words, this may not be a Scarlet-issue at all, but a problem with your BM converter's output to the Flanders.

Stu, but why would the BMD converter let the signal pass thru fine when using a 5DmkII connected to the Flanders?

    Can't say Bro!

Just passing on a prob I had BTW BM card and _my_ monitor. So maybe in your case the BMcard and monitor are happy?

In my case it also let the signal thru, but the _type_ of signal would not permit correct grading on my Dreamcolor (ie REC709 HD color space).

Sorry I can't offer any ideas...

    Stu,
You can switch off the psf mode to transmit a regular progressive signal. Its a check box in the supplied software... No need for a converter....

You must check use 1080p instead of PsF

    Matt!
Cool if applicable to my BMD 3D Card. When I originally talked to BMD Tech support they said the PsF was "IT". period. They did not point me to this feature! But, yes - MINE has this menu feature too.

So why didn't they mention this....?

    odd.

    Damn.
    $400 for a converter I don't need.
Don't know if I should laugh or cry.

    Thanks tho!
