From my tests anything smaller then a 6x6 MB vinettes with a 20-100. The MB20 is a 4x5.6 I believe?
The MB-20 [II] should accept 5.65x5.65. But yes, anything less than a 6" filter will get in the way on the Cooke 20-100 or 18-100 lenses. The front element is 153mm (or was it 156mm?). Either way 153mm = roughly 6".
I don't know about the older 20-100, but I think it's the same as the 18-100 and it takes drop-in filters. Drop in NDs and a 6" flat front are all you need with this lens. Oh and the sun shade.
Edit> I just checked, the front is 150mm on the 18-100. If you're serious about putting a mattebox in front of one of these zooms, I'd look at the MB-14.
This doesn't make sense. The 5.65's were made for this sort of application and the clip-on for the Vocas with its 5.65 is apparently designed specifically to accommodate the 20-100.
Finner, what exactly did your tests entail?
Jeff, the 20-100 has a 144mm front. 144mm = 5.66929134 inches. I think there's enough clearance there.

Cinewalt, Good to know about the front on the 20-100, so it is smaller than the 18-100. At 144mm, I could see where 5.65 might still vignette when full wide or depending on the mattebox itself.
I'll ask my lens guy if he knows how much of the lens front is within effective shooting range. I mean, it doesn't make sense for the 4 corners of the image to actually touch that 144mm perimeter - my guess would be 10 - 20% of the diameter of the lens goes unused.
I have a 20-100 and have been looking into 5.65 matteboxes, so this is suddenly a concern for me!
What's the rental rate? Cooke 20-100 t3.1
The Cooke 20-100 rents for $120/day or $320/week. The Arri matte box rents for $50/day or $150/week. I'll throw the lense/matte box on a couple 35mm cameras and let you know if they vignette. It'll be next week before I can get to that though.
I have used an MB14 with 4x5 stepdown trays on an 18-100 with no problems.
