I'm considering buying a SD MixPre-D and then feeding into the two mic inputs on the camera body, and then I started thinking about how all of this will hook up...

Since the Epic has no support for Line-Level inputs (infuriating! ), without the Pro-IO module, then that means that the EPIC's pre-amps are going to stomp all over the nice clean signal that is coming from the MixPre. If that is true (and I have no reason to think otherwise), then the only benefit to having the MixPre is... well... mixing, and I might as well save my money on a mixer without high-quality pre-amps.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Doesn't the MixPre-D have both line and mic level outputs? I know that it has that "DSLR" output so you don't need to pad the line in order for get a non-overmodulated signal.

... that said, yeah, it's kind of bogus if thats the case. Sorry if this sounds presumptuous, but be prepared for "you should be recording to off-board recorder anyway" type responses... par for the course.

You can pad down the line outputs from any mixer, and it'll go into the Epic or Scarlet inputs just fine. The MixPre does have both a line level and mike level output available. My preference for the camera is to attach a Lectro SR wireless receiver instead, which is actually smaller than the MixPre (but weighs about the same with a battery pack). If you drop the Lectro output way down, it won't overload the Epic or Scarlet input.

I have the MixPre, it does not output mike level (only the newer MixPre D outputs line level). The Mixpre and a Hosa ATT-448 attenuator works fine for audio into Scarlet (along with Hosa XVS-101F to adapt XLR to 3.5mm TRS)

Anyone using the SD 302 with Epic/Scarlet?

What settings are you using to take audio into the camera using the 302? Is an attenuator required?

I am using the SD 744T and I go line level into the Epic attenuated by -25 db and don't really use the preamps on the epic at all. It works really well.

Correct, they added this feature to the MixPreD, which is the current model. I routinely use the switchable Shure A15S switchable attenuator when I have to feed problematic inputs, especially prosumer cameras.
