I've found Handbrake to be very good (only rips to MPEG-4 I think).

Assuming you are on the PC, you'll find that DVDFabHDDecrypter will rip any DVD on the market including copy protected ones. It's free too! :)

DVD shrink is free and works very well, look it up on Wikipedia. It gives you the option of making an exact copy onto dual-layer disk if you have one, or compressing it so it fits onto a single layer disc. On an ordinary TV set, it's virtually impossible to tell the difference.

I guess I take "rip" to mean extract the data from the original disc onto your hard drive if it's encrypted to begin with.

Another tool for unencrypted DVDs is ImgBurn (which you can use with Blu-ray/HD-DVD as well). This is what I use to image my masters, then I simply write those images to new discs to send out etc.

Plasmatic is right though, the second part if you want to write that back to another DVD-5 is to use DVDShrink to compress it and remove menus etc.

PC ... to make a copy of the DVD you own ... ANY DVD ( comes in SD & HD versions) will help in the process ... if the DVD is encripted it unlocks it ... however ANY DVD does not copy ... once the DVD is unclocked then you can either drag the files to your hard drive. editing program or use any copy/duplicating program you have on your computer to make another DVD, burn a image to HardDrive etc ...
