  1. #1 Timelapse and Slow Shutter
I was running some tests on the timelapse feature on the R1 and all of the footage was just sped up like it should in timelapse, but does anyone know how to get footage to actually record the way it appears in before you start recording with the slow shutter blur effect that is used in scenes like the Keyser Soze flashback in THE USUAL SUSPECTS and some of the opening battle in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

However you have it set up should be the same. It doesn't change the way it looks during recording. The RED One is a WYSIWYG camera.

Second feature film, Terminal, now in post-production in Kansas City and scheduled for a late 2013 release.
Third feature film, Dust, currently in pre-production and scheduled for production during summer 2014.

What You See Is What You Get?

The RED ONE LCD used to show light levels, even with the 4 clicks down from the top method, that were much different than what you "see." The footage in post also was different from the look onset. The Epic does a much better job at achieving this but the R1 definitely was not spot on WYSIWYG. Which is why we have so much knowledge base in the exposure threads, ETTR, stops lights, noise levels etc... Even with the Epic the learning continues.

I wish the camera was fully WYSIWYG, but testing tells a different story, the camera will become more WYSIWYG, better and better with each update.

Rodelio, what settings did you film under and what's the issue exactly with playback? In RCX, not in camera, correct? You are trying to mimic the type of effect from the R1 that Usual Suspects and SPR had?

There is a great thread for these types of questions by a pro cinematographer, David Mullen, that can help you out much more than most of us. If you are trying to get something specific he's the man to ask.

WYSIWYG does not apply to this setting on the Red One. Timelapse settings are very volatile. There are quite a few settings that will not even playback, but some settings would. I was shooting in timelapse with 1/2 shutter speed with a step print of 10 frames at an interval of 1 second. Watching and recording in real time gives the slow-shutter blur effect, but in playback it would speed it up dramatically where 30 seconds of recording would playback in just a few seconds. Maybe slowing it down in post may give me the desired effect. I'll have to try that later.
