There's a lot of us out there who fall into different categories. I work a day job... I'm a Geek Squad agent. I need that job to pay the bills right now. Being a stills photographer up here with my particular focus being sports wasn't getting that done in this economy. Just because I work a job outside the film industry doesn't make me any less deserving of the opportunity to shoot on Red, or automatically make me any less of a legitimate filmmaker than anyone else.

That said, I have also spent the last 5+ years on this forum. I've soaked up as much information as I could, I share what knowledge I have, and I never act like I'm owed anything. After this long, I know Red really does have my interests at heart here. And I know enough that I don't go off whining.

But you have to be careful... just because there's a lot of people out there who fit a certain mold, especially as they move from DSLRs to bigger and better cameras like the F3, C300, and Scarlet, doesn't mean that all of us fall into that category and deserve to be painted with the same brush. And there is almost never a reason to resort to name calling and insults. It reflects poorly on the Reduser community and more importantly on you.

I'm not ashamed to say it. I got my Scarlet in 3 days before my 23rd birthday. Some people would say I must be young and foolish, or have rich parents, or whatever. But I've worked hard for years to put myself in a position where I could a) afford the Scarlet b) know how to use it and c) be ready when the moment came to put it into action. I'm writing this while I finish the post on my first commercial I've shot on the Scarlet. I shot it on my days off, starting to roll camera quite literally at the crack of dawn. Could I have shot it on a DSLR? Probably. It wouldn't have looked this good IMHO, or been this easy. I have resolution to punch in, high frame rates, good depth of field flexibility, incredible dynamic range, and limitless options in post. If you'd told me 5 years ago that at this point I would not only be shooting footage this good today but that I would be doing it with a camera that cost me only $11,250, I'd have thought you were insane. Yet here I am- and frankly, the only limiting factor here isn' the camera- it's Me.

And my abilities, much like Red's specs and delivery dates, are subject to change. And I'm counting on it.
I was only referring to *SOME* people (I did say some) . Specifically the whiners and the clueless and the raging ingrates. If I were Jim I would ask for my camera back from them.

You on the other hand seem like a nice guy and I wish you luck with your pursuits.

The only whining I'm hearing is from people who bought Epics who realize their distinctly average needs may well have been suited by a cheaper camera.

Or to put it another way: "Also frustrating is those Epic owners (some of whom paid peanuts due to the upgrade program), who feel that their investment should receive special protection, by hobbling other technology so that it doesn't perform as well as it might."
Dude, any 35 K investment SHOULD be protected. This is NORMAL. Otherwise next time no one will buy the higher model, Red will have less cash coming in, and that means less invested in R&D and essentially less progress.

"Just enjoy your camera and go shoot something" is nice and all, but that does not amortize a huge investment. Other factors come into play, like competition for rentals from lesser models in specifics markets, perception, and so on. I could not show up with a Scarlet on a set. I do not play in a Scarlet market and neither do my rental clients. In my world "whatever is best right now" is always what is chosen, but it has to be a meaningful difference. 5K at video frame rates is one of those differences. Slo-mo is a specialty act that, if it were the only meaningful difference, would destroy the Epic rental market and make it financially impossible for many to be owner operators of the higher model.

    It's not rocket science.

10K can be a hobby investment, 35K, no, not really, not for the vast majority of us.

I haven't shot 5k on my Epic yet. All I do is 4KHD. Why? Because it is the most meaningful format if 1080p is the goal. 99% of all productions shot on the planet are currently 1080p or below. Scarlet is an excellent 1080p camera. I wonder how many of all these Scarlet specs whiners actually shoot big pictures that end up at 4K on the big screen?

This tread has been about the beta, its new features (thank you!) and its quirks and has been a worthwhile resource. Now it's about people who obviously invested into the wrong gadget. Reduser is gaining more and more noise.

    Jarred says:

Phantom Power support is now turned on for most cameras.. There are a few earlier cameras out there that may need to come back for a grounding tweak .

Has someone with deep camera number tested the Phantom Power? Number and mic manufacturer?

    (I can't install 3.2.8 at the moment.)

    Progress.

Does anybody know if the proposed Epic 1080p 60fps full frame downsampled RGB mode is still on the table sometime, or has it fallen off?

Not sure what you meanly 'deep' camera number - but my Scarlet #208 works fine with phantom power. Running a Røde NTG-3 through a x A-box.

Shot three days now with the Beta and haven't had any of the problems that others have discussed.
Can't believe I get paid to do this.
If I don't own it I rent it...

Great to hear that! #208 is "deep" enough...Jarred speaks about "a few", i must test it with my 30.
