Guess I was lucky that I ran a Force_Upgrade because I'd updated my Redmote first :P
Hi Trent, I just tried mapping focus to the +/- side handle rocker, and it's amazing being able to pull focus while keeping a solid grip with both hands on the camera. The step size is a bit small, so the response is a bit to slow to be generally useful, however.
If there were away to alter the speed at which the rocker would move through the focal distances, you guys would really have a revolutionary feature on your hands. Being able to pull focus while maintaining a solid grip on the camera with both hands would be incredible.
Map a Key to Toggle or Cycle Through Different Settings
Goal
Add the ability to have a key cycle through a selection of ISO values. For this example we will have the Side Handle A key cycle through ISO 320, 800, and 2000
Solution Description
Create the following presets. Each preset will set the ISO to the appropriate value and remap the A key to apply the next preset:
- ISO 320
- ISO = 320
- Side handle key A mapped to Apply Preset: ISO 800
- ISO 800
- ISO = 800
- Side handle key A mapped to Apply Preset: ISO 2000
- ISO 2000
- ISO = 2000
- Side handle key A mapped to Apply Preset: ISO 320
Solution Step-by-Step Instructions
- Create a dummy camera preset named "ISO 2000" (we will explain why in the Techniques Used section)
- Open the PRESETS Dialog
- Open the CREATE PRESET Dialog by hitting the CREATE... button
- Name the preset "ISO 2000"
- Add any parameter to the preset (remember this is a dummy preset)
- Create the preset by hitting the CREATE button
- Create the "ISO 800" preset
- Map the Side Handle A Key to apply the "ISO 2000" preset
- Open the KEYS Dialog: SETTINGS->SETUP->KEYS
- Press the Side Handle A key
- Set the PRESS action to "Apply Preset: ISO 2000"
- Exit the KEYS Dialog
- Set the camera ISO to 800
- Open the PRESETS Dialog
- Open the CREATE PRESET Dialog by hitting the CREATE... button
- Name the preset "ISO 800"
- Select the following parameters and add them to the preset by hitting the --> button
- LOOK: ISO
- KEY: Side Handle User A Press
- Create the preset by hitting the CREATE button
- Create the "ISO 320" preset
- Map the Side Handle A Key to apply the "ISO 800" preset
- Open the KEYS Dialog: SETTINGS->SETUP->KEYS
- Press the Side Handle A key
- Set the PRESS action to "Apply Preset: ISO 800"
- Exit the KEYS Dialog
- Set the camera ISO to 320
- Open the PRESETS Dialog
- Open the CREATE PRESET Dialog by hitting the CREATE... button
- Name the preset "ISO 320"
- Select the following parameters and add them to the preset by hitting the --> button
- LOOK: ISO
- KEY: Side Handle User A Press
- Create the preset by hitting the CREATE button
- Create the REAL "ISO 2000" preset
- Map the Side Handle A Key to apply the "ISO 320" preset
- Open the KEYS Dialog: SETTINGS->SETUP->KEYS
- Press the Side Handle A key
- Set the PRESS action to "Apply Preset: ISO 320"
- Exit the KEYS Dialog
- Set the camera ISO to 2000
- Open the PRESETS Dialog
- Open the CREATE PRESET Dialog by hitting the CREATE... button
- Name the preset "ISO 2000"
- Select the following parameters and add them to the preset by hitting the --> button
- LOOK: ISO
- KEY: Side Handle User A Press
- Create the preset by hitting the CREATE button
- Done: Press the A key and watch the ISO cycle between 320, 800, and 2000
Techniques Used
This solution works since each preset contains both the setting(s) you want to control (in this case ISO) and the key action to invoke the next preset in the series. Since we want to cycle through a series of settings we have a circular dependency between the presets (which is why we needed to create a dummy preset to start the process). Note: the "Apply Preset: XXXX" action references the preset by NAME, which is why we were able to replace the dummy "ISO 2000" with the real preset and have things work correctly.
Trent, these new custumizable presets and key mapping functions are brilliant. Thank you very much indeed!
May I also submit a proposal?
What about a set of actions to increase/decrease audio input gain. I would love to use the zoom rocker to control my audio levels without having to access the menu.
Thanks for the reply, Trent! After playing with it more, it seems like the step size is actually good enough to let you hit the marks, but it's the repeat rate/responsiveness that could be a bit speedier. Honestly, I feel like it's only a few tweaks away from working exceptionally well. I'd highly suggest you guys play around with it in the office and see if you feel the same.
Trent,
I have been attempting to create a single button cycle for Exposure check/Video check/OFF, but no number of toggle commands in the string will turn off either feature. I tried:
1. Exposure check toggle for button press
apply preset advance to step 2 on release
2. Video check toggle for button press
apply preset advance to step 3 on release
3. Video check toggle for button press
apply preset advance to step 1 on release
I expected the second Video check toggle in step 3 to turn the feature off, but it does not. Suggestions?
It looks like your problem is that you are using the "Exposure Check: Toggle" and "Video Check: Toggle" actions in combination with this "recipe". What you want to do is follow my instructions for the ISO cycle and instead of setting the ISO and saving it in the preset, you want to set your camera into the correct mode "Exposure Check", "Video Check", and "Off" and save the preset with "False Color Mode" and your key mapping to transition between the different presets.
I hope this helps. When I get some more time I'll try to create the full set of presets and document it in this thread.
