I have a client that wants to show off their new 4K video wall with some new content. I've been doing some tests with some of my older footage, and I can spit out a ProRes HQ file no problems. Looks great, plays great. But they want to see an h.264 file, and no matter what I try (through QT, Compressor, FCP, etc.) it always fails immediately.

    Does H.264 not support 4096x2304?

Or, what am I doing wrong here?

The footage is from the RED ONE, btw. Though the stuff I'll be shooting will be Scarlet.

You need to use H.264 profile 5.1 or higher for 4K resolution. (5.1 highest frame rate is 30FPS)

How would I go about doing that with the tools I have (Compressor (both the old and new), FCP 7 and X, and QT Pro)?

    Thanks George!

I'm not sure, been exporting all my stuff in windows environment and the export options are a bit different. But i think in final cut on export the option is in "video options" and set the "restrict profile to" to extended. If that doesnt work could give http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24173/x264encoder a shot.

With the tools you have there is a free x.264 Quicktime component encoder - http://www003.upp.so-net.ne.jp/mycometg3/ that works - it's been discontinued for development as open source software, but it still does the job.

Otherwise Handbrake is free and may be able to handle it as well. Haven't tried it for 4K output, but it uses the same encoder (x.264) and has recently been updated to be able to read prores files.

Besides Compressor (for Mac), any recommendations on other softwares, especially this which make the best DVDs possible. Thanks

Adobe Encoder didn't work (or it probably would have but I'm stupid)...but the x.264 encoder did indeed work!

    Thanks much, guys!

    (EDIT)
So it worked in QUICKTIME when I had it at HIGH QUALITY and FAST ENCODE.

Quality was fine, but I put it to HIGHEST QUALITY and BEST ENCODE and it keeps failing again.

    Sad face.
