UPDATE: Relisting on Ebay. Buyer didn't want to pay insured shipping at cost.... Also will now include foam cut shipping case.
Hi All
We have three of these lovely lenses and need to get a bit of variety so I'm letting one of them go.
Going back and forth with PMs has proved rather time-consuming on Reduser so I've done the lazy thing and listed it on Ebay item 140751466384
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cooke-Cine...#ht_922wt_1398
But feel free to ask any questions here in the thread.
If you are reading you probably know all about this lens but here is the Ebay description.
This auction is for the lovely Cooke (Rank Taylor-Hobson) Varotal Zoom 20-100mm (5:1). This was designed for 35mm cinema cameras but works a treat on our Red MX digital cameras, Red Epics (at 4K) as well as the Arri Alexa, Canon C300 and C500, Sony F3 as well as the upcoming Sony FS700. Basically any PL mount 35mm size sensor is suited for this lens. It covers the same range as you would get from a full set of primes but at a far more reasonable price. And you get the classic Cooke look.
We are only selling as we have three and need to get a longer 25-250 for more flexibility. This was last used a month ago on a high end fashion shoot with an Epic. It produces a really nice rounded, natural picture that takes the edge off that stark digital image you sometimes get. A lovely filmic quality and the range is fine for most projects. You can shoot an entire feature film off this one lens (and many have). Kubrick was fond of it and Spielberg used this model for the recent TV series "Band of Brothers".
There is a fashion to favour these slightly more vintage lenses on the sharper digital cameras to get some "analogue" filmic warmth back, rather than using the super crisp clean modern glass with the latest flare-reducing coatings. And good lenses are hard to manufacture quickly in numbers but the increase in PL mount digital cameras has depleted the number of lenses available.
With increasingly limited budgets and the need for a lot more setups to be shot in a single day, a zoom can be quicker than swapping primes all the time.
Though the exterior shows its vintage, being more than 20 years old, the glass, iris and movements are all in good condition with all the focus marks still clear in feet and meters. There is no haze or fungus but there will always be evidence of cleaning on the surfaces which does not affect the image. The zoom and focus have a smooth, steady action, and of course are geared with long throws for easy use with a follow-focus. Depending on if you are putting it on a film or digital camera some shimming may be required to get the backfocus bang on. While it can open up to a constant F2.8/T3.1 people find the best sweet spot is around 4/5.6.
There is a support ring included, but you will need the bottom part to match your particular bars, either 15mm or 19mm. Since this is a big lens you will want to support it. The mount is Universal with a PL mount, so if you needed to use this on a BNCR camera it is possible to get a Universal to BNCR mount.
