Thanks Michael, I am humbled and honored by your endorsement. And same goes for Michael & Light Iron, which should come as no surprise to anyone who's every been on Reduser or seen any of the great features that his company has done post production for.

Thanks for the complement, Brandon. Obviously a TON of the credit goes to the filmmakers & DoPs who supply me with stunning images to grade.

Looks like doing color/post work with John, or any other NY facility just got a lot more attractive, at least for anyone who likes a 30% tax credit. Evidently Governor Cuomo and the NY state legislature understands that the math supporting tax credits for production AND post make economic sense and are willing to take the PR hit.

When is the Cali legislature going to pull its head out of its ass and compete with other states/countries in providing incentives? Hey John, can you hook a brother up with some couch space... ;-)

It might make sense if you happen to be New York and have that as a built in attraction. It doesn't make the same sense if you happen to be Michigan (as Michigan found out) or a lot of other places who believe that bribes - errrr, sorry, "incentives" - can lure an industry that's only looking for the lowest bottom line and will very quickly abandon you if someone comes along who's even cheaper than you are (a lesson that Vancouver once had to learn).

The good thing about incentives is that they can attract business - for a while. The bad news is that you have to keep giving away larger and larger amounts in order to keep that business (as Georgia found out). There are really only a few places that are their own attraction for the film business. Once you get past Los Angeles, New York, and London its all based on who's willing to pony up the biggest amount of dollars. Extending those things to post production isn't likely to change things all that much because a) the vast bulk of directors, producers, actors, and studio execs live in Los Angeles , b) the infrastructure for post in L.A, especially post sound, is so evolved that it's almost always the defacto choice, especially for television series, and c) post usually doesn't represent a large enough portion of the overall budget to give up those advantages. Not to mention that if anything, post is moving towards a much more decentralized model in which facilities are involved in fewer of the steps than ever before, so I'm not sure that something like an incentive is going to make much of a difference. It hasnt made much of a difference for either Vancouver or Toronto, at least in anything other than the visual effects business. But time will tell.

I agree, Mike, though Louisiana has definitely made an impact on the geography of the business. But in the end I think New York's incentive is very beneficial since there is already quite a lot of production started and finished here, having a stand-alone credit will be a big benefit for producers shooting in other locations but still wishing to finish 'at home' so to speak. We do see quite a bit of this, and as a matter of fact, this tax incentive may bring a prominent director's film DI back from Germany to us here in NYC, which I would be ecstatic about for purely selfish reasons.

    cheers,

    John

Mike's points are well taken; bribes are a slippery slope plagued with unintended consequences. That said, I would argue that California has too much economic skin in the game at this point to play coy. Like money spent to lure tourists, production and post incentives bring in (or retain) dollars that flow throughout the state economy. Moreover, by keeping the best talent busy right here in Cali you help maintain the status of the industry and protect its long term viability.

It is unfortunate that in Sacramento the incentives sound bite is usually something about giving away dollars to the corporate run studios while social services are cut. Perhaps I'm just crazy to think that another 1,000+ people earning paychecks, paying taxes and not collecting unemployment benefits is good ROI.

In any case, states and countries are offering incentives, like it or not, believe in it or not, its happening. I would argue that California is best served by keeping the local entertainment industry running strong because letting it slip away could cause further strain on state finances over the next decade. For example; what if there was less work in LA and some of the highly paid above the line talent moved out of state and stopped paying CA income tax, etc.

Sorry about the full frontal threadjack JT.

I cannot speak highly enough about our experience working with John, he does amazing things. If you want years of color experience coupled with an extreme understanding of what current technology is capable of John is your guy. We look forward to having him involved in the finishing of many projects to come. You spent the time to properly shoot it (hopefully) now get the most out of your footage and have it properly graded :)
