That is a fair assessment. It would be interesting to have a Epic and RED One in a side by side on a green screen, both at 4k and see the results. I was mostly addressing the assumption that Epic would be more light sensitive than the Red One. Same exact sensor if MX. The RED One has the 5K it just uses it in the look around, non-recorded image area.
Edit Add: I should also say that the compression choices in the Epic could be a really big deal in the Epic. to go to 3:1 for a green screen could be a big advantage over the REDCODE choices in Red One. That just occurred to me. But there have been a lot of great films shot with both sensors on the RED One that if you are on a budget it still is a great choice. Might want to go with the REDCODE 42 on RED One.
Looking at the original post Ali mentions shooting at 48 fps, I don't know why but he does. This in my opinion would leave the RED One out of contention as you cannot shoot 4K at 48 fps. Ali go for an Epic so you can get the advantage of 4 or 5k if you need to shoot 48 fps. This is a specialized sync rate that might be a challenge for a novice btw. For example neither the Epic or RED One will record onboard audio at 48 fps so a scratch track for syncing is not available. And doing timecode will be a interesting situation, not sure how people are doing 48 fps TC.
