  1. #1 Cantankerous Audio w Scarlet and Epic
Working with a scarlet running scratch audio into a cam via shotgun mic. Set up audio yesterday. Saw levels, recorded sound. Today, turned the camera on, no sound. Got a green bar of hiss when we listened with headphones. Messed with it for a while until we had to start shooting.

On an epic shoot last week we were setting up the cam with scratch audio and it took about 20 minutes of going through the menus, rebooting, menus etc etc before the sound suddenly started to work with seemingly no clear reason.

Anyone else experience this? Am I doing something wrong?

Hmmm. What firmware version(s)? Only serious audio issue I have had with my two Epics is messed up timecode with beta 3.28. Using 3.07 now, but sure do miss phantom power.

Exact same problem with me. Epic -X. Tested fine with onboard sound when it first arrived, then for no apparent reason decided not to take any sound onboard a few months ago -- just gives static when various mics are plugged in, as you described, the green bar of hiss. Been shooting separately with a sound recordist for that time and haven't sent a log to RED but will get onto this today.

I know there used to be an issue where sometimes the sound wouldn't register and unplugging and replugging the mic cable corrected it. Have you tried this? I haven't had any problems on my Scarlet or Epic with sound appearing.

As for menus, just push the levels indicator on the touchscreen and the relevant audio controls will come up.

Thanks for your concern and suggestion Jim... as for my situation, alas, no cigar, tried everything (other than sweet talking which is next, although she's onto me I'm sure).

To file under the magic mysteries of firmware, Gene (the Epic-X) was about to make the big journey back to the States for a repair visit, but the latest firmware upgrade seems to have restored onboard sound back to her. (v3.3.3)
