Disagree - There are simple rules for maintaining online anonymity and security. But just because they are simple does not mean they are easy... it is a pain in the neck, and requires that the tools are used 100% of the time. If they are not, it's like all those movie scenes where The Man is just waiting for one... just one... ATM hit somewhere with a credit card. All it takes is one.

    1) Tails, VirtualBox, and Tor. Know them. Love them.
    2) No cookies, no 3rd party plugins.
    3) No downloads
    4) No purchases online. Ever.

Simple. But certainly not easy. ; )

Most people in today's society are not willing to put up with the inconvenience of online anonymity. It requires significant changes to any "wired" lifestyle. But it can certainly be done.
