Yep. I have an older mac pro (2007 version 2,1) with a ATI Radeon open CL video board in it. No cuda but the board (5770 I think) will support Mercury Playback to some degree.

Playing back from a RAID I'm getting smooth playback in Premiere 6 at 1/4 res most of the time...and all the time at 1/8th.

I would assume a properly outfitted more recent Mac capable of running a couple of higher end Cuda cards would do 1/4 to 1/2 easily. I'm also about to get a pretty substantial PC that I expect to run much faster than 1/2 without any RR.

Hi Wes - thanks for your insight. Yeah, I know I need to upgrade.... will be doing that soon. But for the immediate future, this issue doesn't seem related to settings, etc - I even get the yellow "media missing screen" when I attempt to scrub the thumbnails before adding any clips to a timeline. The thumbnail turns yellow and then maybe 10 seconds later will update itself to a new frame. Every other clip format seems to work fine... Thanks for any guidance (-:

I have been getting the same result using a new Sonnet Echo Pro and a new MacBook Retina 16GB Ram...ect. This leads me to think that there is a setting that needs to be adjusted...playback resolution or something. Interesting to know people are getting the media message using a different PCIe chassis.

Try a reinstall of PP....when I was having issues with media missing, I tried everything I could think of....then finally did a reinstall and that worked.

I know the mobile rocket isn't really intended to be a "playback device," which is why I'm now only using it for transcodes. I just wish the transcode times directly out of PP were close to what RCX does. :-( If I have a 5 impute sequence, it takes about 6 mins in RCX to render it all, however, within premier pro, like 20 minutes. :-(

With the Echo Express Pro I can playback in 1/2 without any issue in Red Cine x. Haven't tried it in Adobe yet.

I have no issues with playback at 1/4 in Adobe Premiere without Red Rocket. I can even almost playback at 1/2 but then my CPU seems to bottleneck. I run this on a Windows machine with 32GB internal memory, fast new quad core CPU overclocked to 3,5Ghz and SATA3 SSD disc with my raw content and separate SSD for OS and software.

Notice that Cuda (GPU Playback) does not help the actual playback at all; only helps out when you start adding transitions, effects, etc.

My main issue is when it is time to actually render from Premiere; as soon as you start scaling down content (like 5K to 4K, or 5K/4K to 2K) in the timeline it kills the render time.

The problem is premiere, red rocket and 5k hd, it doesn't like the 5k hd so you need to disable to card if you want to work in this format. I have the same problem and its crap for such an expensive card!

Which output or seq setting in PP is most supported for RED workflow? I am using a Retina sonnet echo express Redrocket setup and still having a hard time nail the sweet spot. I know some formats are just buggier then others, maybe I will try 4k HD.

You need to install the special Red decoder from Adobe's website for the R3Ds to playback properly. Oh, and every time you update the software you need to reinstall these patches, because Adobe's updates overwrite the files.
