Hi, I'm just after some advice on uploading for vimeo with Scarlet footage. I've found that anything around 500-600mb takes hours to upload.

The main project for this question is a series of minute long videos.

It seems ridiculous, but at the moment I leave the 4K transcoding from Red Cine X Pro to prores, and use ProRes while editing in FCPX, then I compress again to h.264, and the upload to vimeo. Of course the Scarlet (being such a great tool) still keeps pretty good resolution in HD after all of the trauma I face it through.

My main concern here is the amount of data that will need to be uploaded.

What is everyone's preferred method of controlling file size, but keeping that high res 'Scarlet Look' when uploading?

I don't really think there is a "Scarlet look". But since Vimeo will recompress your video in any case, you want to upload in the highest possible quality. I usually do a 1080p H.264 encode for Vimeo and YouTube and set the bitrate as high as possible without hitting the filesize limit, which I think is 4GB. So the solution would be to get a faster internet connection, or leave your videos uploading for the night.

I use the Vimeo preset in Adobe Premiere and have had no issues with quality. A 2-3 minute video is about 200mb, takes 5 mins to upload and a few mins to convert. I don't see any reason to upload anything that Vimeo will have to convert anyway.

its your internet speed. Upload at the highest res. The compression that Vimeo does is not nearly as harsh as the compression that Youtube does.

    Thanks for the replies!
Just to be clear, is it worth keeping the footage at 4K (apple prores 422) resolution right before you upload to vimeo, or is 1080 prores or even h.264 a better option, (eficiency wise). Also, 200mb for 2-3 minutes, is this after h.264 compression.

Sorry if these questions seem unthoughtful, I'm just confused, and am new to the mass of data that is 4K footage

I usually render out a nice 4k process 422 for safe keeping and render out a 1080 h.264 at around 10mbits for vimeo. Looks fine to me.
