  1. #1 Scarlet and 5D III Timecode sync?
    Hey guys!

I have a scarlet and two 5D iii that I would like to sync for multicam editing. I know you can sync the clips with audio, but I would much rather sync via time code. Now I'm new to using time code, but is there a easy, effective way to sync the time code between the three cameras. Also is there any other tips that would help the process go smoothly. Thanks as always guys!!!

You could use a Timecode Buddy master transmitter on the Scarlet and two Timecode Buddy receivers on the 5Ds. Use Video Toolsheds FCP auxTC reader to decode the TC track recorded as audio on the transcoded 5D Quicktime files. You'd still have sync drift problems on longer takes though.

One reason why the EOS 5D's are so cheap is that it's not a timecode camera. The internal clock crystal is not going to be stable enough for long sync scenes. You'll have to fix it by eye -- which can be done, and is not that hard.

You want true, precise frame accuracy, use three Scarlets or other Red cameras (to name a few pro cameras that are designed for timecode syncing).
