    Hi,

I have e-mailed to RED about this but never got an answer. I figure some of you might have an answer because you have seen and handled the EVF, although there's very few of them out there.

My problem is that I was born with a crystalline lens defect which impaired my vision greatly. I was from a legal standpoint, blind. Nevertheless modern surgery fixed that with the same operation as for cataracts : vitrechtomy, lensectomy (removal of so said crappy lens and eye fluids, replaced with artificial counterparts). Again, small hitch, my eye is to small to accommodate an intra-ocular lens without considerable risk or chronic pain. Solution : extra Costco sized giga contact lenses of death ! +21 curvature .. :sorcerer: (they actually make a quite audible 'plop' when you drop them. Very useful to find them!)

My idea was to get a custom designed eyepiece of those unsual optical specifications (you have to correct for spherical aberration and diffraction at that point...) to complement glasses and contacts for those long running days (that can encompass more than 24 hours. Filmmaking seems to elude even the laws of quantum physics.). I was wondering if it was possible to fit a custom eyepiece onto the RED EVF.

Have you looked into having your optician make you a diopter you could mount in a removable rubber holder? Commonly known as "Drop in Diopters" Used when the DP and Operator have different focal ranges. It is easily removed or added for the person requiring it. No mod to viewing system.

I know a DP who is putting a Tiffen 49mm Diopter in the viewfinder of the Video camera. Just pulling out the rubber eyepiece part dropping in the diopter and putting back the rubber

This situation arises a lot with operators/dps with an astigmatism quite a bit. Have your optometrist make you a monocle (I suggest you get the inside diameter of the EVF first. You can easily attach it with a few small pieces of velcro attached to the inside of the EVF and on the monocle itself, then adjust the diopter as needed. It is easy to put in and remove. Also by having the velcro tabs and if you put it in the same way the ac can still "mark" the diopter for your eye quickly.

    Hope this helps.

I honestly didn't know there were other options than screw in attachments. Nevertheless, my prescription will probably require more than one glass element to correct for aberrations considering its high power. I wonder if velcro will be able to hold the weight and drop-in is pretty much a no go. I think this one is looknig like a screw-in scenario.

I don't mind hacking/modding my EVF for the purpose, although it will need to be reversible since I'll probably rent it.

Well...this is a route you may not want to go but you could always purchase a 2nd EVF. One for when you operate/dp and one for rental purposes. It may not be an efficient way to work to have (2) on set but I would assume the director, gaffer, and ac will at times want or need to check through the eyepiece.

    Good luck.

I'm sorry, but I'll allow myself a shameless bump. I'd really appreciate something officialish from RED.:)
