  1. #1 For Sale...One of the Coolest pieces of Production Gear in LA
OK...this is an unusual piece of equipment...my accountant writes it off on my taxes as "Lodging" equipment. I call it one of the most important pieces of production gear that I have owned. And it is cheaper than an Epic package with a 12-1 Optimo. This is the standard copy that I have used in several broker listings:

For Sale…One of the Coolest Office/Residence “Condos” in LA

Do you need a regular “place” in LA? Here’s what I have been living on / working on (off and on) for over 15 years:

    A 45' Motorsailer yacht!

This is one of the coolest residences you could have to live on, have a home office, use it for client meetings, etc. A compact yet roomy (for a boat) place in LA.

    www.PacificLight.info

I am in the film business (isn’t everyone here?), and I have owned Pacific Light for over 15 years. I live in Atlanta, but most of my business has been in/out of LA and this was not just one of the nicest ways to have a “presence” in LA, but also one of the least expensive. I am semi-retired now and no longer need the boat, so I have decided to sell it and here it is.

It is a beautiful 45’ Lancer Motorsailer Yacht with two private sleeping cabins…one on each end of the boat for complete privacy, with separate heads/showers. I have had associates on the boat producing commercials for me and they all thought it was a treat to work/live on the boat while the commercial was underway. It was also very inexpensive compared to putting them up in a hotel in the area. I called it my “Two Bedroom, Two Bath Cabin on the water in LA”

It has a full galley with stove/oven, a compact refrigerator with separate freezer section, 27” Sony TV (I use a Directv dish, receiver), stereo built into the lower main cabin cabinets, Thermostat controlled heating in each cabin, a large enough hot water tank for the two showers, etc. The water tank holds 100 gallons, enough for about a week for two people.

The main asset, though, is the overall appearance. I have been working on the boat, upgrading the interior fit and finish, systems, etc. for all the time I have owned it…as I was planning to retire on the boat. Now, as usual, things have changed (my daughter in Atlanta now has a family, and my priorities have changed).

I set up the aft cabin for my office with typical office equipment, printer, etc. and a fairly extensive editing system, with a tower, two 24” monitors, etc. (the pictures don’t show this as I have moved the system to Atlanta). This is also the guest cabin with its own private head and shower.

The slip rent (the place on the dock where you tie up the boat) is about $1000 / month and that is roughly one half of the rent of a one bedroom apartment in the marina area (one with the amenities, view. etc. that you have with the boat). There is a swimming pool for the boaters, along with picnic areas, laundry facilities, extra storage available very cheaply on shore (in the apartment building overlooking the slips/docks). It is very secure with gates with locks at the head of the docks, security personnel periodically walking the docks/parking areas, etc. Free underground parking is near the boat (at the base of the apartment buildings). Great dining is nearby…I have often taken the “dinghy” to various restaurants by way of the water…and there is also a water taxi that operates in the harbor. Other costs, such as periodic maintenance, insurance, etc. amounts to about $150.00/ month.

And if you don’t like your neighbors (some of the nicest and most friendly people live on their boats on the dock and often have dock parties/cookouts, etc.), just move…take your “condo” to another slip in the marina, or even to another marina such as Newport Beach, Long beach harbor, Santa Barbara, etc. With the economy the way it is, slips are available almost everywhere.

All in all, this is, I think, about the best way to live/work in the LA area….15 minutes to the LAX airport, downtown Santa Monica, etc. About 30-45 minutes to Hollywood.

If you need to regularly spend some time in LA…this might just be the thing to consider.

Price?...$99,500.00 This is a fairly low price for this boat…one that would cost new upwards of $500K new! As you can see in the pictures in the website, extensive work has been done to the interior, adding Bent Oak Beams overhead and Teakwood Paneling everywhere, making it a place that you would feel proud of. Note the actual wood burning fireplace in the lower “den” area. All the upholstery is new, and there is a LOT of it. The price is low, reflecting the market conditions now with the economy. I would say that you could buy this boat…keep if for several years and if you keep up the maintenance, sell it for what you paid for it or maybe even more, assuming that the economy stays the same or returns to normal.

Then there’s the “great to be alive” factor… having friends, clients over, etc. and sitting on the aft deck of the boat, sipping wine and watching the sunset. As they say…”priceless”

Nice, I thought when I first looked at the images that it was one of the newer Nauticats, I had not heard of Lancer.

Hey Larry, hope you won't be a stranger to LA when you sell the boat. Was such a pleasure to meet you at the Red store. Happy trails.

Can not agree more, Boat living is king.
You got the cooling water in the summer and the heating water in the winter. I refurbished a Trolling boat during the last 7 years. I loved it from the day I got it when it was a ship ready to sink any moment, now the renovation is... almost complete and then it's, to me, worth so much more than any villa apartment. Would not sell it for anything. I'm not a potential buyer but it would be great to know what a boat like that sells for in LA.

    Thanks, guys.

@ William...Yeah, the Lancer was designed after the Nauticat 44. I looked at several Nauticats before I found the Lancer...very similar boats and as you probably know, The Nauticat line is very well thought of.

@ Greg...thanks and welcome to Red User!

@ Vance...It was great meeting you at the Red Store...I enjoyed talking with you and we should do it again. Maybe do some Helicoptering? A guy who owns a boat on my dock is co-owner of a Hughes 500. We flew it over to Catalina for lunch recently and he let me fly it for most of the way...100' off the water hugging the coast...amazing! Can I log that as dual time, I wonder? Or does it need to be with a certified instructor?

@ Bjorn...wow...now THAT's a Boat! I gather you live on it? I would cast everything to the wind and move full time to mine if I didn't have a family back in Atlanta...I love living on the boat that much. If I ever get to Sweden, I would love to see your boat. Very, very cool!

    Thanks again, all,

    Larry

I love to live onboard, but I also love my wife and I have not been able to convince her to stay on board for more than a few months in a row. Even though I tried all tricks I could think of... As now the boat looks almost like a garden, filled with flowers and cosy furniture and that has proven to render quite long onboard periods, but I doubt it's enough to get rid of the apartment... LOL.
