Is it possible to have a red monitor and an HDMI EVF running at the same time.

You can currently operate one RED EVF or one RED LCD at the same time, not both.
Along with one RED source, you can run an HDMI source or an HD-SDI source at the same time, not both.
So, at present, the only way to have more than two monitor sources is through HDMI or HD-SDI device looping.

It's my understanding that a future firmware update will allow both hdmi and hdsdi at the same time. Has anyone heard when we can expect this?

There have been talks that only the Epic will have both SDI and HDMI out simultaneously. Scarlet will only allow one or the other.

    Really?

That's very disapointing. Even with the RED efv/lcd port turned off?

You can't turn off the evf/lcd port.

It must be something to do with the boards. Along with not being fit for 5k 24fps

I hope they figure out a way to swing it. Perhaps with Dragon anyway.
