Not trying to start another Apple speculation thread. Just curious. I know there are some genius tech people on here and I would like your advise. We are all wondering if the Mac Pro is coming but...with the new Ivy Bridge in the new Macbook Pro...is it needed.

If the new Macbook Pro is released and will use the Mercury Engine to its full potential and I use a PCIe expansion for my REDrocket should I have the need for a Mac Pro. Mine is currently a 1.1 and have maxed out its potential. I plan on getting the new Macbook Pro and now am thinking I may not need another tower of power.

Whats your take? Is a MacBook Pro + Premiere CS6 + REDrocket PCIe expansion enough to do the edit job?

I can let my tower do the final render but is this rig good enough to edit on?

Also...I know tests have been made on PCIe expansion boxes. Can someone give me a cut and dry answer on the best one to get? Thanks for all your help in advance.

When you have an approved nvidia CUDA card, you get powerful parallel processing (CPU + GPU) which allows you to edit and Export at the same time with incredible speed.

With newer processors like Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor (8 Threads), the CPU can now take on a lot more tasks. We can now even use laptops to playback native Red files in ¼ mode instead of 1/8 mode. This was previously only possible on a desktop system.

Thanks Kwan, I read that the new Macbook Pros, scheduled to be released next month, will have NVIDIA graphics. I read this on a site and can not confirm any specs because I did not read them from Apple. I am hoping they will natively meet the requirements to use Premiere to its full potential.

Any idea about a good Thunderbolt PCIe expansion for the Rocket?

I'm currently rendering out full projects in 5k times lines and HD out of my laptop... QUICKER than my 8 core tower. NO SHIT!
I just pushed my tower to the corner... and is only going to be used for RED ROCKET transcoding. The day I can plug in a Thunderbolt RED ROCKET card... is the day TOWERS will be dead for me.

And Adobe Premier is rocking my world... (never ever thought I'd ever say that) ... But man! It's bloody quick in all areas, It kicks FCP7 to the side walk... (never ever thought I'd ever say that either)

    The new world is here.

With the "old" i7 quad core (mine is more than 1 year old), and CS6 you edit very easily.
@Kwan : i did not see any improvement in rendering with the GPU on the Macbook Pro (I made a test with GPU+lion and had the same time final rendering), so, it is still a bit long, but very usable, and not very far from my 2009 8 core Nehalem with quadro 4000.
Still waiting my ultimate PC notebook to make good tests in the other world of Windows. I am afraid Apple don't care very much of powerusers these days.
