On the Tokina, you had to be right next to those sharks, especially at 4k and no crop at 11mm!
Stunning to say the least. Loved it.

Thanks Tom, yep at the wide end you really need the subject on the port. Hard to get but it looks good when you do.
Hi,
quick question. A friend has the gates ex1 housing and he really likes the look of this, and is now considering going scarlet etc.
One question he had is power, does the housing allow space for some kind of backplate and battery or is it red volt only ? I've looked on the gates site and cant find the answer.
Thanks.
Rich.
Exactly as Johnny said, I am using it with Global media pro V-Locks, Gates provide the battery plate, mount and everything you need you just supply the camera, lens and battery. I think at this stage there manual doesn't confirm that the GMP batteries fit but I can confirm they do. I easily got two 1 hour dives with the camera on the whole time and fan was set to 100% and 75%. I have shot with Ex1's a lot underwater and the Scarlet kicks it's ass, the image looks flat when captured but shooting underwater in RAW is bloody amazing. I was considering getting an external prores recorder for quick turnaround jobs and was a little nervous about the workflow... not any more, PP 5.5 RedcineXPro it's easy fast and the benefits of 4k RAW are massive especially underwater.
I'm assuming you dumped that idea? because now with the external prores recording....we are getting even worse quality than say shooting an EX1...and i can confirm that (depending the recorder) it's not that great blown up....but again, flat prores image with no processing is just not a good way to go IMO...i'd much rather shoot an EX1 vs. going direct to external prores record device. You'll get much better picuture from the start with the EX1, Z1 or P2....or any of those cameras. Your of course WAY better off shooting RAW and taking time to work the images in a proper color monitoring realm--now here's where it becomes a BLACK ART or BLACK MAGIC---i know now how B.M got their name....I can go on about this end of things....but i'll keep it to that.
Exactly Johnny right, colour grading RAW is a black art I know this has just opened a whole new ball game in underwater grading for me and its big curve which I feel I am pretty low on at the moment.
Nice Jon, that worked out well!
Correct....Believe me...i can tell you that there are people at the top of this game that are still alluded by it all....it really is another art form and one which having at least a basic understanding and "basic" tools will dramatically change the outcome of your imaging. But to get into secondary color correction etc....requires skills that sometimes are just not possible given time they require to learn and invest in equipment.
Edit: here's a perfect example: my avatar and yours...i graded mine within REC 709 for television on a monitor to TV standars and not breaking any TV rules....and the difference on a computer monitor is dramatic when viewed in TV world....I'm also learning the hard way when it comes to what is "accepted" and what is not accepted....and it's cut and dry when submitting a show.
Great Video.. Very Well Done.
