Does anyone know if the 128gb SanDisk cards will work on a scarlet? I mean, red make there own CF cards, but there bloody expensive. If i can get one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-S...item20c55536b9 will it handle shooting in 4k? And what is the data-rate of a red cf card?

    OR-
if your happy to shoot HD, buy a PIX or Ninja. You can load up with one of these AND a 500GB card for less than a 256 RED SSD card - with extra 500GB cards coming in at around $400 ea. My PIX240+SSD clocked in at about $3200. Works seamlessly with my Scarlet.

    OR-
a couple of manufacturers have announced 4K recorders as of last NAB, tho not sure of the price-point and whether it costs out vs RED SSD

but, as Trev sez: only one thing will fit in your Scarlet SSD slot and work....

    No worries Tim-
understand the angst of 4K potential but 2K budgets. I have 1 whole 64Gig SSD (which you HAVE to have) for the odd 4K splurge and necessary firmware transfers, but the PIX existence is what made the RED cameras remotely affordable/justifiable for me. Thank gawd for both.

Hey Stu, can you record to the PIX without an SSD in the camera?

    Yes.

With the new beta firmware there is an option to set the camera in an external recorder mode so that when you hit rec, the camera operates in the same way as if it was recording to SSD, but doesn't actually record to REDMAG. So it does things like reduce the fan speed, and activate the record flag in the HDSDI stream, but it doesn't record to SSD. In fact, in this external recorder mode, it won't let you record if there is an SSD in the camera. :)

For example the record icon is super imposed with EXT and you are not allowed to record in this mode if an SSD is mounted in the camera.

    what Alex sez ... :)

You CAN have the SSD IN the camera, you just have to electronically dismount it. Menu actually tells you this if you forget. Pretty sweet!
