as far as i know you cannot import R3d's into FCP at all....where did you hear you can import R3d's? Saw another thread about importing them in COLOR also where someone said they do this...but i only know of how you wrap them as with a QT wrapper and they are essentially prores 4444 files. but importing to FCP has never been an option--but maybe i've missed something now that i've been in PrPro land for some months.
Thanks Johnny
No I never read that Final cut could import R3D files but in all the stuff I was reading it wasn't stated clearly that it wouldn't.
So thanks for being clear.
However I still can't get to my R3D files with Final cut's log and transfer...
You still should not be able to read R3d with log and transfer....no way to do that last i was using FCP...you must create files from R3d's in Redcine-X....then you can edit in FCP...So again, log and transfer does not recognize R3d.
I think, but can't recall since i never went this route, but if you are shooting R1, you might be able to use those proxy files in your timeline...but i had always made prores 4444 & 422 HQ files inside RCX and then used those for edit instead. At moment, if you want raw edit capability, FCP just is not the place at moment...there are others out there and most popular/affordable seems to be Premier. But other options as well....
Use adobe. Literally drag n drop edit ready 5k 120fps on my iMac. Cs6 is free for 30 days. I converted, it is incredible.
Log and transfer used to work...
Much better plan, though to transcode in RCX-P and do a conform for online in Color or Resolve or whatever...
The proxies can work on R1. The ones I tried frtom Epic wouldn't without rendering, and I couldn't set realtime to unlimited.
But that might have been a local issue, as the redcode plugin has been updated for Epic/Scarlet.
Dunno, really...
You can get the plugin to transcode direct to FCP 7. In log and transfer window go the the little prefernces icon and choose the plugin, what flavour pro res and the look from the littled rop down menus. It's always worked fine for me.
Even if it works for some, I wouldn't recommend it.
Rather do a first light in RCX and do the transcode there, it can trigger several threads of transcodes (REDline) and that's much faster on any multiprocessor machine than Log & Transfer. RED made this so easy, you can even generate a XML for FCP from a rough cut in RCX.
