My biggest gripe about this last 'non-update' was the old GPU and the fact that they really should drop the price more for two year old technology. However, with the ability to load up a current Mac Pro with a GTX 580, I can still get enough performance to tide me over until the next REAL update from Apple.
Thanks Hans, Never thought about going for unofficial cards... My bad experience on pc's with costum parts haunts. E to this day and I fear incompatibilities, crashes, unsupported os upgrades... I'm actually quite happy with my current macpro with quadro. I've placed an order for the macbookpro already, so no turning back there. I would like to know, however, how it performs compared to this Macpro I have. If it is close to my current macpro experience, I'll get the red rocket thunderbolt :)

Sérgio, these guys actually support the cards they sell, so it's not like you are completely on your own. The guys who does most of the coding on the custom firmware regularly posts over the Mac Rumors forum. Evidently they sell lots of these to people who do post work and color correction. The GTX 580 is a real beast when it comes to CS6 or DaVinci. They do most of their sales through eBay, and while the card is not cheap (and requires an external power supply) it's definitely a kick in the pants power boost to a Mac Pro. I'm about to order another Mac Pro and I'm sticking one of these bad boys in it:

So is it smarter to just spend 2K on a beefy Hackintosh at this point?
