The only hicup with the Epic I can see improvement is

    - the viewfinder (needs a better optical path, either through a better optical magnification for the Bomb or an all optical viewfinder with mirror shutter (I know mirror will not happen but many DOP's would be happy))
    - the fan noise and overheating in longer takes than 10 minutes @ lowest fan speed . Would be a blessing for sound engineers (think of all those fans in 3D rigs).

So far you've made the best digital camera on the market and I bet Dragon will continue your leadership.

Well Jim, you shook these guys up. Not only did you get them up off their asses, you broke their entire, stupid business model of withholding technology from their customers, dishing it out in tiny increments, while "protecting" their 1/4 million dollar 1080p cameras. That is one of the most important results of all this -- the death of the despicable Sony/Panasonic video camera business model, which screwed the average guys in the middle and at the bottom of the food chain. Panasonic is still literally reeling from this, IMO. And obviously Sony was caught flat footed.
Can someone please do this to Intel and the chip market too!

    Jim,

I'm glad you showed the way and inspired others. You inspired me.....now we can have 4k and beyond underwater...this was never possible before. The images from DeepX are mind blowing...it wouldn't have been possible without the Epic, tiny size, 5k, RAW and foresight to make an exchangable mount. I've never seen undistorted and sharp corner to corner motion picture underwater before. Now I know how it looks. Like you, I could have done it just for myself...but you showed the way. I'm glad I made it available to others...all good fun and thank you

This is the single most ideal situation we could have ever dreamed of. Everyone sprinting to win. We LOVE this. Everyone's best effort. Finally true competition. That brings out the best in everyone.

Look for many new and wonderful things from our competitors in the near future. Exciting!

Now... I have to say, we are working on a few things ourselves. Things that leapfrog reason and defy gravity. We are so excited about the future of image capture that words can not describe.

What a wonderful time to be involved in this industry. Stale evolutionary thinking and complacency has now been replaced by accelerated advancement.

Having said that... and in the end... I'd bet on RED. :-)

While this all sounds counter-intuitive, I can see how you can sincerely mean it when you say you welcome the competition. I think the proper corollary would be how a product is so advanced that it stands out in its field. A few will see that as good but the masses will reject it because it does stand out in its field. But when the field looks similar, the masses will gravitate toward the best product.

    Good thinking!
One camera is a shoot... two or more is a production.

Red.com is a true leader. Playing fair, fighting hard.

Never thought of it like that... nice observation. I can now see how this will benefit Red in the long run. The argument has changed from Film cameras vs. HD cameras vs. 4K cameras to 4K cameras vs. 4K cameras. Since Red has built its company on the 4K mantra, this shift to 4K can only help them. Plus, with Red I can shoot 5K too. Like Jim said, now its all about everything else besides resolution. Let's see what the Dragon sensor will bring! I'm hopeful even though I love my Scarlet as is :)

    Jim,

I've been around this business for a bit and no one has shaken up the camera business like you have since Gottchalk invented the Panaflex back in the early 70s.
Truly happy to be a part of the club..
