  #1 Apple's announcement...

My 1st computer was a Mac in 1984. I have never owned anything but a Mac. I am an Apple collector. I knew Steve. And I am a huge Sir Jony Ive fan. Huge...

Today's announcement was certainly a setback. No question about it. The appearance is that Apple is abandoning the professional. No 17" Mac Book Pro and no real new Mac Pro are signals that will shake the core of the Apple professional.

But I don't believe this is the end. My bet is that Apple is just taking a bit more time to get it right. I spent several years in Apple purgatory when Steve was gone and Sculley (and others) completely screwed up Apple. I expect this moment in time to be just another brief moment in Apple limbo.

There are lots of smart guys at Apple. Too smart to give up the professional. Professionals are the front row. They influence the "rest". Apple gets this.

My bet (and I have no inside knowledge whatsoever) is that Apple is feverishly working on a Mac Pro with full 4K graphics support, USB3 and Thunderbolt, along with a new 17" (or greater) Mac Book Pro.

If I am wrong, Apple clearly knows the consequences. I just don't think that Apple is ready to give up what they have worked so hard to achieve... the loyal support of the professional. I wait patiently.

It's just a matter of money... Professionals are just a niche and Apple makes far more profit with iPhones, iPods and iTunes. If pros were an interesting market, we would have a 4K GH3 in September ;-)

I agree. Just because the FCP 7 to X transition was handled badly everyone thinks that they've abandoned the creative industries but I still think they care about the pro market(s). It just takes time to do things right. Transitions, redesigns, and new technology are extremely complicated to handle and everyone is so quick to be an armchair analyst these days.

I too believe they'll build a new Mac Pro, smaller, with more interface and 4k displays, it's just a matter of time. In my case, longer than I'd like to wait. The new 15" MBP and my old Mac Pro will have to do for now.

So Jim, having built my film partnership from the ground up and currently at the stage where we are purchasing gear, is the Epic form factor going to stay the same for the next fives years? Do you want to make a lighter/smaller version in the near future? I am happy with the Epic's size and weight, and I'm planning on "GHOST" being our flag ship moving forward. Our first day out shooting with Epic #2482 we found something truly remarkable, I'd like to share this story with you one day.

Well that seems to confirm it, no 17" in the near future at least.

I don't think Apple is working on a New Mac Pro or 17" MBP. I think they are working on something BIGGER. Like a table, or literal desktop. . Think Minority Report.

All of us want to continue believe in the Apple philosophy that Steve created.

    Agree 100%.
    - They have made "Retina" part of their brand. Now that they've spent a lot of work marketing "Retina" as "good" it makes sense to extend that to as many products as possible.
    - There wouldn't be that 4K option in FCP X if they didn't have 4K in their sights.
    - 4K means all the old computers aren't fast enough. So they get to sell more computers :)

Even tough right now I would like to put a big fat nvidia GPU in a tower I don't see the future with big huge bulky aluminum cheese graters. Things are getting smaller and powerful and I don't mind it. What about a Red Rocket refresh? Thunderbolt, maybe a little more affordable?
