To explain Mike H. and also for other fellow student users to take an advantage of $100 (back to school) gift cert.

You weren't explaining anything to me. I knew it was the education discount as I said previously. What I was saying is that you're only saving $220 on the computer after someone said you were saving $400 and getting a $100 gift card (which would be $500 total). Even with your discount on the Apple Care (which I recommend waiting to get until near the end of the first year to make sure you're keeping the computer or in case anything happens to it) it's savings of only $330 (not $400) and then the $100 gift card. Either way, good job on informing everyone that there's ways to get these computers cheaper than full price, whether if be because they're a student or eligible for a business discount. Cheers!

To suggest to other users to deceive apple....good intentions on your part i'm sure...is not a reasonable nor professional advise....I'm sure you want your peers, associates and clients to expect professional behavior. Do what you like, but to blast it on a public forum to deceive apple or any other company is just not something i think you want on following your reputation. Ok, I really only want to spring for the 2.3ghz if I can... Any chance I could edit 5k at 1/4 res In premiere pro cs6 with the 2.3ghz/16gb?? And.... *GULP* how about 6K when the dragon drops?? $600 feels like a big jump for a .3 ghz boost... Will that extra CPU power really push the performance that noticeably? What I'd really love to see is two systems playing back epic video at 1/4 res... Too bad premiere isn't installed on apple store systems :)

I highly doubt it. I tried the 2.3 retina with 4K @1/4 and it was playing without dropping frames until putting a cross dissolve between 2 clips. 4k @1/2 was a no go of course so I really don't think 5K 1/4 is going to fly.

If Adobe update CS6 to work with the 650m maybe we'll see some big improvements. I am waiting for my 2.7 retina and will report back when I get it. I think the 2.7 will be great for RED footage. I also tried to add the 650m to the list of OpenGL card without success. I didn't try hard because it was my friends laptop and I had limited time but if anybody has success in enabling CUDA please report back here. I was ale to enable OpenCL but it didn't seem to do improve anything. OpenCL is crippled at the moment anyway so that's probably normal.

A nice article about the 2.7 model with some performance comparison with older models. It fares quite well even to old Macpro's. Much better than my current one, for example! Of course, this doesn't take into account graphics card upgrades, but, still, very promising!

Thanks guys... I'm reconsidering looking at the 2.6 model. I'm wondering how willing they'd be to let me bring in a red mag reader and install a trial of cs6 to test in the apple store...
Oh well, it sounds like I'd better aim at future proofing myself with the 2.6.

Got my 2.7Ghz today and I've been testing Premiere CS6, FCPX, Neat Video etc.. I was able to enable CUDA in PP CS6 but it was not stable and i'm not even sure if it was accelerating anything.. It's obviously not supported so no complaint here. Same with Neat Video, the GPU report back only 33MB of CUDA GPU RAM available.

In REDCINE-X PRO I did a transcoding test with a 52sec 4K clip (4096x2160 - 1/2 Premium Debayer) and my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" 2.2Ghz transcoded in 8.36min while the RETINA 2.7Ghz did it in 5.5min. Nice upgrade for me there.

FCPX is absolutely sick specially with Retina. If they add RED support in X it will be absolutely insane. This program is so well optimized it's ridiculous.

I think driver / software updates are needed for CS6 suite and some plugins. It's a very powerful machine but right now it's pretty much only "tuned" for FCPX. I haven't tried Resolve yet, that's next.
