Tom, great article. I feel like I'm going through a similar crossroad right now. My heart is still set on working with Macs but needing to keep an open mind about alternatives.

It is interesting though how quickly you can jump the price up to build a computer that does everything you want. I customized one at Puget out of curiosity and easily hit the $9k mark. When all is said and done I'd probably be looking at $12k with some additional hardware and software. Still a deal compared to top of the line editing systems in years past but for small companies, a price point that needs careful planning. Those guys do seem like they have their act together. Keep us posted on how things go from here.

Thanks Steve. Im glad you enjoyed it. I think I still felt on the fence up until yesterday :D

Yes, the dollars add up very quickly, especially for systems designed to work well with Red / Epic. But building them just isnt one of my skills. :D

    Good article Tom.

Luckily I had my good friend and fellow Red user Jon Thomasberg help me build a fire breathing water-cooled overclocked .r3d eating monster.

Cs6 is ridiculously fast on it.

just cut a show we are pitching to Discovery.

Shot all 4k on Scarlet and the workflow and speed was fantastic.

    Nice.
Im curious why you went with the 1 processor Sandy Bridge E instead of the 2 processor Sandy Bridge EP Xeons. I know you can over clock the one you selected, but I had heard that for Red most folks need the power of the Xeons. Although maybe the Red Rocket does some of that job instead.

Yeah at the time the srx motherboards weren't out yet, so I went single overcocked CPU.

With the 2 nvidia graphics cards and the rocket, I am not waiting for anything.
