WOndering for Adode after effects and Premiere, I have the choice between gtx580 with 1.5 gig memory, or 3 gig memory.

Will I see any benefit with the 3 gig with a stacked afx project?

    Any input appreciated.

    THanks

When working with 4k footage, at least 3GB VRam is needed.

I've seen some issues with the less expensive cards with ~1 GB of memory.
I'd definitely recommend more VRAM - And for mission critical work, I'd prefer to use a Quadro 4000 (And 5000). They are just rock solid with PR. (and actually made by Nvidia)

    Nope.

    Epic 5k FF = (5120x2700)/(65536/4) = .84375 gigs / layer

1.5gb vram = 2 layers of 4k , 1 layer of 5k for Premiere. For AE there is no benefit.

I don't usually get edits to color correct with only one layer/track. My comment stands. Plus 3GB VRAM is recommended for 4k work in Resolve.

    A bit more info:

The most "render" intensive task in PR when working with RED is actually not rendering at all - It's the decoding of the RED files. If you play back a 5k file on a super fast 12 core machine at full debayer, you will see that it will saturate each core (varies depending on which CPU, etc) If you add a RED Rocket, it will reduce the CPU usage to ~3-5%!

GPU's do not currently accelerate the decoding of the RED files, but the latest workstations are now fast enough to handle the decoding in realtime. However, it's still nice to have the Rocket as this does most of the "heavy lifting" and frees the CPU's for other tasks such as export. It also gives you sharper, clearer playback as you can set higher debayer settings (1/2 for example is very nice for most monitors)

The GPU is most helpful when it comes to accelerating filers and scaling (big one) But the beefiest GPU out there isn't going to give you significantly better playback on average workstations.

What system is able to playback red files at 1/2 res in real time? Specs? Mosts posts I've seen say its a pipe-dream. I'd love to be able to do that but I've never heard of anyone being able to do it.

Check out the thread that is right below this right now, http://reduser.net/forum/showthread....h-Premiere-CS6. Olivier shows a laptop doing 1/2 res with ease.

1/2 res has been no issue for mainstream Core i7 PCs for the last 2-3 years ever since the Core i7 980X released. The latest Xeon E5 systems can do real-time in full res. You just have to use the right system.
