So I now have the new 11 inch Mac Air. I await patiently the arrival of our RED SSD USB3 reader so I can assess file transfer speed to 2 portable 1TB Thunderbolt drives. Ultra light. Hoping it's much faster than the FW800 solution I've been using until now.

Apple didn't have any 1TB Thunderbolts in store so I'm trying the Seagate FW800 with Thunderbolt adapter that slots into the base of the HDD.

    Anyone doing the same?

I have the Macbook Pro 17 inch too but don't really look at the footage while shooting (apart from the first take or two of the day). So I went into the Apple store just looking for the fastest dump down solution in the smallest form factor. It feels as light as the Ipad. Quite exciting really!

Been using the MBA 11" for SSD transfers since two years ago, when TED was doing so at a shoot with Michael Cioni at ET.

But mostly used the 17" MBP, and now the new 15" MBP Retina Display... ;)

Using an air for SSD transfer is actually a pretty smart idea... You could even pull it off with some sort of small USB3.0 or TB 2-disk RAID or a larger SSD for better throughput than single drives, as with USB3 and TB you're really limited more by the drive you're copying to than anything. Hell, it's not too different from the size of the Promise Pegasus RAID... Gaffer tape that sucker to the top of it and it's like you only have one thing to take to set!
An OS X based solution for fast file transfer on set is now a whole lot cheaper.
