  1. #1 Graphic Inserts in RED ONE
    Hello everyone!

Im just coming out of Media School, having some experience with the Red One from some movies we shot, but obviously not enough, thats why i ask the pros now:

We have to shoot greenscreen with the Red One in a few days. Its a short commercial, in which the actor has to "grab" a 3d-built cellphone out of the frame. But It will be difficult after a few takes to always find the exact same spot where he has to move his hand / to find the right spot at all so it merges with the later built-in graphic, since everything is just green, so the postproduction guy asked me if it is possible to create a transparent overlay with these graphics, so we can check the position of the actor´s hand directly in the frame.

Is something like this possible? To put some kind of graphic in the Red One Feed? The guy mentioned Magic Lantern for his 550d, where this is possible....

    Thanks for the help!!!

Think about it from the other side. Rather than Red specific, how can you do this with any camera system?

There are products (like those from Ultimatte) where you give it a camera feed, as well as a feed from a computer, and can either overlay one on top of the other, or key out the green/blue background from the camera feed and put the actor into your scene.

So with the proper file preparation, and piping, and gear (such as an Ultimatte), you can feed out to a monitor, live, a mockup of your scene.

Or, you can physically create a green (or blue) prop that the actor actually grabs. A bit less gear on set, a bit easier for the actor to interact with, but it certainly provides it's own distinct challenges in post. I wouldn't be tempted to think that either option is "easy". The harder you expect it to be, the more forethought you'll put into it, the less issues you'll run into and the more flexible you will create your footage.
