I used to have an old 8core mac pro, but when i got my 2.2 quad i7 laptop, it was over twice as fast! i wouldn't consider a tower unless its a very late model.

The mini is just OK. I think Apple made too many compromises and has some odd configuration choices there. If you want the quad-core i7 CPU, you have to buy the "server" model, which eliminates the internal optical drive (no big deal), but most of the extra cost is for the Server version of OSX.

Too bad your old Macbook Pro won't boot.

I have another option you might be interested in, I'll send you a PM about that.

Went to the Genius bar and they fixed my Mac Pro, no charge. Now I know that Macs cost more than PCs in general but I do like the reliability (never had a virus) and they have excellent service. Such earnest young people in the stores.

Now in the same mall as the Apple store (Bridgewater NJ) is a Microsoft store, and it was laid out and the design was so similar it made me smile. I think it was bigger, also. They had a lovely, tiny HP laptop there that looked great for travel, but not so much for post production.
