What about 4.5k WS (4608x1920 = 8.85mp per frame)? It's the same pixel filtrate as 4k (4096x2160 = 8.85mp per frame)... The RED1 does it and it just looks that much nicer when supersampled down to 1080p (plus, as with the R1, it actually resolves to about 4k instead of "just" 3.2k). I'd rather have 4.5k than a burst mode I think.
I think burst mode would be possible in the SCARLET body, I mean after all it does shoot 3k HDRx, which is 2 3k channels, equaling 6k in size. Obviously the camera can do more than what we know, just like the GH2 and AF100 having the same basic guts, but one is the pro line and one is not. I am not against that, I think it's really business smart to consolidate parts so that manufacturing is a heck of a lot faster, and it actually brings the price way down on both items, since they don't have to worry about manufacturing 2 separate lines of guts for both cameras. Anything extra that we can get out of the SCARLET for creativity is awesome, and RED is just the company to do so. No other camera company in the world would even attempt this.
Hmmm, what you just said doesn't make sense... At least in my mind. Every frame on the SCARLET is 14MP, and as far as I know HDRx is the same in that in each channel of 3k lies 14MP still images. So 2 channels of video, each differing in stops and each channel is carrying 14MP stills. However I may be totally wrong, the HDRx may not be like that at all.
2 3k images don't equal 1 6k image. The naming does give you just the width, but doesn't get the picture more lines too? ;)
So, doing the math: 3072*1536 makes 4718592 pixels while 6144*3072 makes 18874368 pixels, which means 6k produces 4 times the data of 3k.
A burst-mode would need lots of ram already included in EPIC and Scarlet, i don't think RED built that in and left it useless for the whole time. For me, a burst-mode is just a workaround for bottlenecks of yesterdays cameras, one that doesn't fit into the RED-design. I also think RED is honest when saying that EPIC and Scarlet are already pushed to its limits. And don't forget, Scarlet is not only limited by encoding-power.
@Mike P., yeah i would love to get more .5 and WS/HD-modes, even without more fps. 4.5k would be awesome. :)
Since burst mode was planned for Scarlet, for the S35 as well as for all others, the idea of higher fps burst modes seem to be a good thing in the eyes of the powers at RED.
How hard this is to achieve with the existing hardware, I - and probably mostly all of us - have no clue.
The old S35 Scarlet was planned with 30fps@5K in mind with a burst of 72fps@5K and 150fps@3K bursts for the 2/3". But then again a lot has changed since then. ;)
All I know is: if RED can make it happen, they will make it happen! And I truly believe that. I don't believe in any hold-back-schemes coming from RED.
A higher fps burst mode on SCARLET would not cannibalize any EPIC sales. There's a world of difference between non-stop 120fps@5K and an activated burst mode on SCARLET. No matter what resolution.
