It was announced around NAB this year that FCPX would have full support for Red files by the end of this year. A lot of people felt it was too little too late; promising native R3D support a full 18 months after Adobe had it is a little . . . non-pioneering.
The project management in FCPX is still what kills me. I can't imagine any studio sharing projects back in forth the way it's currently set up. GREAT for a solitary person, especially one shooting with a 5D and pumping out shows to YouTube. And no knock on that; there are a growing amount of people that do just that and make more in a year than I do, so it's not inherently bad, nor would I call it necessarily "not professional". It just doesn't help most of us that happen to be on these forums.
agreed that it wont help all but if one person can find use of it, then Its all good :)
The workflow was obvious to me since Ive been doing it that way from the release.
However there are others Ive ran into outside (and inside) this forum that deal with R3D but have not figured out the current worflow.
FCPX is not the only app out there that doesnt work with RED footage.
I do believe that folks are still running Media100, PremierPro CS1 and Avid Meridien systems.
Hopefully they too can find a workflow that reaches R3D :)
Evan Schechtman from Radical Media said he preferred working with Prores in a RED Workflow a lot more then working with the native media in Premiere because he had all the long render times at the end.
That being said, if Premiere could do it all this while ago, I suppose an app like FCP X with a completely new codebase should be able to handle it, on newer hardware. And having FCP X automatically make the Proxy Media in an Event, without you having to think about conforming and stuff, would be great. (if never hardware could do this pretty quickly, without a RED Rocket? I know, I'm dreaming probably)
I don't think the media management of FCP X is all that bad. I had to get used to it, working with the Events and Projects database, and I wasn't a fan of it in the beginning (some things I still don't like), but I do think it has a lot of potential for the future, and it can already be used in a very clever way now. I'm hoping to see more of Apple in this regard in the future.
This white paper is a good official explanation to do it right now, and it doesn't sound like a bad workflow at all, but it isn't support for native R3D at all. So considering the time Apple got to get this right, I hope they do. It's a very strong feature of Premiere to have the support they have in the way they have it, I hope FCP X can better it.
The ability to link and unlink sync sound for L-cuts, J-cuts, b-roll slips and the like is a "must have" feature for an NLE in my way of working. I'm fine with "magnetic" or other assisted timeline tools as long as there is a way to toggle them on and off quickly. In FCP7 I often modify material in a separate sequence and then copy-paste those elements into the main timeline to avoid issues like time remapped footage moving other elements that need to stay where I parked them. Is there a workaround in FCPX? Do I not need one?
My first look at FCPX a few months ago revealed issues with importing and exporting elements for specialty work that seemed like a huge step backwards. AFAIK FCPX is well suited for one-man-band users but problematic for larger collaborative environments. It also seemed intent on doing things for me and resisted my attempts to "turn off" the assistance.
Note to Apple FCPX developers: give me the option to "go manual" when I want to do something unusual and then back to "quick assembly" mode with a toggle - best of both worlds perhaps?
Meanwhile, back to learning the keyboard shortcuts in PP6...
