We have the extreme pleasure of testing the near-final model of Element Technica's EVF mounts which were provided to us for upcoming RED tests on a feature film. We'll have a more detailed report in the next couple of weeks but the bottom line is that Stephen and Hector and the rest of ET have created an essential accessory. We are beyond grateful for their help in getting the REDs as 'set friendly' as possible for our upcoming tests and wanted to share a bit of the love here.
With the mount on, the EVF is rock solid in place. Just imagine the placement and feel of an ARRI 435 viewfinder and you'll get the idea.
The ability to position the viewfinder far forward on the mount is key to getting the proper balance for hand-held shooting. Just after two days, we can't imagine hand-held work without it. The mount allows you swivel up and down as well as position the EVF exactly where you want it - forward/back and up/down by engaging two separate brakes. Add a longer dovetail to the EVF and you could extend the viewfinder up and out even further. The final production model may also include the ability to move horizontally as well which would be great. The clutch feels just right - easy enough to adjust when you need to but otherwise locked in tight for the ride until you decide to make a change.
Here our some pictures of the mounts in action . Please note that these are not the final production versions, the part of the mount attached to the top cheese plate (another cool Element creation) is not final.
