Just Purchased CS 6 and loving it. Quick observation and question - it seems as if on my system (Mac Pro early 2008 w/ RedRocket) when I try to view or add clips captured in the 5K HD format, the system chokes. I get very long delays in between frame refresh and a yellow "media pending" popping up all the time. When I press play in the timeline (Red 1080p) the playhead advances and the audio plays but the video stays stuck on the same frame until I hit stop and then it will eventually refresh after a long pause.

If I disable the Red Rocket card, the footage scrubs and refreshes normally, but of course the system is incapable of playing back 5K smoothly without it even at 1/4...

Playing normal 5k FF works just fine so I definitley regret capturing in 5K HD.... Any thoughts on how to enable 5K HD support with the RedRocket? Is this working for anyone else out there? I believe that I am running the latest Firmware and Drivers for RedRocket (1.1.16.5) , as well as the CS6 6.0.1 upgrade.

I have a similar computer with RR and just did my first transcode of 5k HD footage via Redcine XPro 14 and did notice any slowing of performance but I did not put a stopwatch on it.

My 2 year old Rocket has worked perfectly for 5k HD the last few months but started behaving strangely about 2 weeks ago, skipping frames and freezing on playback and transcodes, its been at Red for a week of testing/diagnostics, of which Red said it passed all their tests and was "fine", mean while the rental rocket has been working perfectly fine with 5k HD and anamorphic projects at various compression settings, in both Redcine X Pro and CS6 (just like the old rocket did, before it started to falter). I just got back the old Rocket yesterday from Red and it has exactly the same issues it did before the RMA to Red, so I guess freezing during playback and transcoding at 4 or 5 fps is now the acceptable norm.

Hi Tom and Shiblon - thanks for the info - interesting. To clarify, 5K HD footage plays back and transcodes fine in Redcine-X, its just inside the Premiere Pro 6.0.1 timeline that it seems to choke big time compared to 5k FF footage. Shiblon, are you saying that you were able to get smooth playback with 5K HD footage inside Premiere Pro with your rental Redrocket card?

There are known issues and reported bugs related to performance issues with 5k HD footage. 5k FF = no problem. HD is a newer flavor and it is a known issue.
The best workaround at this point is to shoot FF and crop in post.

Hi Wes, Just wondered if you had made any progress with this? If I were to shoot in 4k 16x9 would this affect the RED Rocket in a similar way?

    Hey Ben,

No updates so far - The 5k HD issue may be with us for a bit.
I believe that 4k HD may also be problematic - I don't have any media or I would try it. I'll do a little test when I get a few minutes.

4KHD existed in Red One, for years, so I think it will be fine, but you never know.
