Mine is just so freakin' smart. She responds to commands in both Spanish and English (yes, a bi-lingual dog), she knows numerous hand signals, from sit up, turn around, chicken, let me take your leash off, to go get my hat, tick check, go outside, go upstairs, etc. She knows how to communicate what she wants, and has different sounds she makes for different needs and wants. And, we can tell which of her doggy friends has come to visit by the sound she makes.

Here is the real kicker. This dog uses telepathy, and I am convinced many dogs have it. I'll be sitting here writing, and just feel something, and look up and sure enough Kami is there, giving me the walk-time look. Okay, not so incredible. The weirdest one is at night. I'll be sound asleep, and just get this feeling, wake up and see her sitting at the foot of the bed, staring a hole through my brain. I turn on the AC, and she lies down.

Once she even pawed the bed to wake me, showed me the fan on the floor wasn't pointing in the optimum direction for her to stretch out, so I readjusted it, and she laid down, did her stretch out thing.

She knows that when I make coffee, there is going to be a spot of milk for her. On and on. I think it's easier to communicate with her than most humans. The way she looks at you, sits, makes sounds are all understood, and visa versa.

I have had some really wonderful dogs over the years, but this one is the smartest by far, or at least that I really noticed.

Oh, and Kami is Husky. She was slated to be put to sleep due to a chin deformation, and was offerd to us last minute. Everyone else said no, she's not perfect. Man did they lose out on a cool, cool dog. And, she's an alpha on top of all this.

    Best dog ever.

I do have fond memories of Benji, a Brittany Spaniel we once had. Very cool water dog. Then one day he just vanished. Never did find out what happened.

Your story brings up memories. I had a Shepherd-Husky mix (sweetest, smartest dog on the planet!) and a Brittany Spaniel. The Brit I used to think was dumb because he would ignore me but then I relized that it was that he just didn't care unless there was something in it for him. So he was actually incredibly smart. Also the most patient dog on the planet, as the tortures performed by my two young children can attest. I used to joke that he'd wouldn't complain unless you stuck a fork in him.

We now have a very sweet hound mix. Loving, gentle and playful -- perfect for my two kids. She and the Shepherd/Husky were both rescue dogs and trust me, they know. The bond from this is like no other. You are their saviour.

Dogs rock.. I have a golden who is way smarter then I have trained him to be! I love looking at him, then smile at him, and he automatically starts wagging is tail.. Awesome! He also knows "go home" and 1/2 a mile away from home on our walk, he will bring me home (stopping only to pee on every tree).

Training my pup has rubbed off on the my cat as well! My cat who knew nothing (or let on that he knew nothing) now knows how to sit.

Pets are as smart as you want them to be..

Dogs, cats, trees, rocks. These have a language all their own. They see in ways that we cannot. Listen to them, and they may bring you blessings.

Oh so true. What's that old saying? Ah yes, 'Dogs have owners, cats have servants'.
